Sir,

The terrible tragedy unfolding in Japan reminds us all vividly of the dangers of nuclear energy. This must be the time to re-think plans to go ahead with new nuclear power stations. Instead we should be putting much more money and effort into new renewable energy projects and into reducing our energy consumption. This is surely the approach that a forward-thinking government should take.

It is even more important that we end the fiasco of having our seas patrolled by nuclear submarines armed with missiles which could inflict tremendous damage, not only on the people of an 'enemy' nation, but on the whole of the planet. We all know that if these horrific weapons were ever used, it would be a disaster for the whole world.

Please cancel this ridiculous Trident programme now instead of working on updating it. The money saved, £100 billion, could be used to help the poorest people in our society who as a result of the cuts are seeing their benefits and support reduced or removed.

Pembrokeshire Peace Group,
