In last week's issue we carried an article on Tenby Town Council's call for fairer car parking charges throughout the county.
During the council's discussions on the matter, criticism was levelled at the town's two county councillors, Clr. Michael Williams and Clr. Mike Evans, who town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, claimed had not responded to emails he had sent them on the issue.
This week, Clr. Williams has provided us with a copy of the letter he has now sent to the town clerk, in response to last week's article. It reads:
Dear Andrew,
Re. Tenby car parking charges.
I have now read the Tenby Observer report, and in particular the comments made by Ms Lane when she is quoted as saying 'Maybe we can ask them again, as this it a vital subject and I feel it is really bad that they haven't responded'.
The invitation to me to meet with the Town Council, dated March 7, which I received, referred specifically to the Williams Commission only, and I replied that I was unable to attend on that date. There was no mention of car parking charges in that email.
Following the failure of your council to respond to what for all levels of Local Government was a critically important report, I did as best as I could to relay what concerns I could glean from you to Commissioners when I met some of the members in Cardiff on March 7, despite the consultation period having finished.
The great concern should be the total failure of the Town Council to respond to this consultation, despite my pointing out the importance of this Commission and urging you to do so when I met with you on November 26, 2013.
As far as the Williams Commission is concerned, I'm afraid that due to your council's failure to respond, it is now too late, despite my attempts to influence on your behalf after the closure date. I will write to you shortly with my latest understanding of where Williams is heading, but I have to emphasise that not to have responded to the Commission was a major missed opportunity, and I am frankly staggered that you failed to take up such an opportunity.
Finally, I refer to your reply on April 7 when you state, "I fear that councillors got mixed up as the debates rolled into one, although if you had attended to discuss the 'cutbacks' issue, the question of car parking charges could also have been discussed."
I fear that I am not clairvoyant, neither am I a member of TTC.
Michael Williams,
County Councillor,
Tenby.
