NOMINATIONS are being invited for the Pembrokeshire branch of the Farmers' Union of Wales' Countryside Award for younger farmers bucking the trend and continuing to work in the county's agricultural industry. "The aim of the award, which was launched successfully last year, is to recognise the determination of younger farmers in the county and acknowledge their hard work and dedication," said county chairman Wyn Jones. "In a recent FUW survey, only 44 per cent of respondents indicated that their children wanted to become farmers in comparison with 58 per cent in 2002. If the industry is to have a future, it is vital that more young people are encouraged to enter the agricultural industry and it is even more vital that we nurture those which we have. "In presenting this award, we hope that the achievements of the younger generation of farmers in the county will be highlighted and applauded," added Mr. Jones. To be eligible for the award, the nominee must be 40 years of age or under on January 1, 2006; actively involved in agricultural production or land management; and normally resident within Pembrokeshire. A cash prize, perpetual trophy and a year's free membership of the FUW will be awarded. Further details and nomination forms can be obtained by telephoning the Pembrokeshire FUW Office on 01437 762 913. All nominations must be submitted by Friday, May 19.
