Tenby Town Council have been feeling flushed with success this week after learning that Pembrokeshire County Council has agreed to re-open public toilets within the walled town.
"The county council has confirmed, in writing, that the public conveniences in Upper Frog Street will be brought back into use before Easter 2008," Mayor of Tenby, Clr. John Griffiths, revealed on Monday. "A risk assessment was carried out before Christmas and it was considered economically viable to undertake the necessary work to bring these toilets back into use. This is excellent news for residents of Tenby and for the tourists who are the lifeblood of the economy of Tenby," he continued.
Mayor, Clr. Griffiths went on the explain that the closure of the public toilets in the South Parade last March brought into focus the lack of facilities within the walled town.
Accordingly, the town council authorised the organisation of a petition to protest against the situation. Within three weeks, this petition garnered over 2,500 signatures and was forwarded to the county council with the active support of Nick Ainger MP and Angela Burns AM.
"The county council took the concerns on board and I am delighted that they have written to us to say that they have now been able to find a viable avenue to re-instate the toilets in Upper Frog Street," said Clr. Griffiths.
"The town council would like to express its sincere appreciation of the efforts made by the proprietors of various business outlets in Tenby in collecting signatures for the petition. The council would also like to thank Nick Ainger and Angela Burns for their strong support and, perhaps more importantly, the county council officers for their sympathetic and positive support in finding a solution.
"It would appear that, contrary to some rumour, democracy is still alive and well in Pembrokeshire," he concluded.
