Twelve months ago, Waste Awareness Wales launched the 'no junk mail/dim sgrwtsh' campaign. A total of 3,554 households in Pembrokeshire, and 94,752 household in Wales, have now deregistered their details from advertising mailing lists in Pembrokeshire, and are saying 'No to junk mail'. The campaign was launched in response to research1 indicating that junk mail comprises up to four per cent of the four million tonnes of household waste produced in Wales each year - by opting out of advertising mailing lists the 94,752 deregistered households have helped to reduce almost 4,000 tonnes of junk mail waste from being produced in Wales. To help combat the problem, Waste Awareness Wales produced a range of 'no junk mail' campaign resource packs, detailing three simple steps to help people prevent junk mail and including a tear-off postcard which consumers can return to the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) to deregister their details from advertising mailing lists. Pembrokeshire County Council has been using the resources to raise local awareness on this campaign. The council's waste awareness officer, Rebecca Whalley explained: "Using the information provided by Waste Awareness Wales, Pembrokeshire County Council has been able to raise awareness locally to encouraging residents to say no to junk mail and I am pleased to see that this is happening across the county. "Junk mail is not only a nuisance, but it also makes up a significant percentage of the household waste produced in the county each year. "By deregistering your details, you can cut the problem off at its source and do your bit to reduce the amount of waste you dispose of. Of course if you prefer to receive junk mail and are part of the Orange Bag Recycling Scheme, please remember to recycle it along with all your other paper waste." This activity is part of the Waste Awareness Wales' 'recycle for Wales/ailgylchu dros Gymru' bilingual media campaign, which aims to encourage the people of Wales to use their local recycling facilities to safeguard Wales' environment for future generations.
