With no-one coming forward voluntarily, Tenby Town Council are to write to local residents groups in a bid to retain the town's five play areas.

At the last meeting of the council, members heard that Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, and other members had met with Mr. Nick Bailey, of Pembrokeshire County Council, to discuss play area funding strategy.

It had been explained that to refurbish and maintain the five existing play areas, the town would need to be in charge of them, not the county council.

Special committees for each play area would need to be formed to look after these play areas. Grant funding was available to these committees which could not be secured by the county council.

If the committees did not take over the repair and maintenance of the play areas, the county council would continue to do so, but they would not replace equipment when it reaches the end of its lifespan or is broken, eventually leading to the removal of the play area altogether.

However, at Tuesday's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Brown said that she had received "no feedback" from residents groups following the press reports of the meeting.

"I feel we should now write to all the residents associations to involve them," she suggested. "We need to get moving on this."

Members agreed.
