On Wednesday, July 11, Greenhill School held its first Africa Day. The day was organised by Mrs. Lloyd from the geography department. Greenhill School is now twinned with a school in Ethiopia and South Africa through the connecting classrooms project. Mrs. Lloyd visited Ethiopia earlier this year to find out about our twinned schools. Pictured are a selection of the activities that happened on the day. During the day, all students participated in lessons about Africa. In maths, students investigated the symmetry of African masks, and also held a cake stall, organised by Ms Henderson, which raised over £200 for Farm Africa. In the science department, students investigated disease, and also learnt about how soap is made in Africa. The English department wrote letters to African school friends, the DT department cooked African dishes under Miss Palmer's guidance, while the geography department held a coffee ceremony for all its students - complete with authentic coffee and costumes! The music department had a very special visitor - Bongo Clive who taught students about African instruments. The RE department was visited by Christian Aid who taught the students about the importance of Fair Trade. The drama hosted a shadow theatre group who showed Year 8 how to create shadow puppets. The climax to the day was a performance in the main hall of students performing African dance, tasting African food, and watching the shadow theatre performance. Everybody in the school learnt something new about Africa, and now looks forward to welcoming their African school friends to Greenhill next term. The day's events were recorded by Miss Spratt and have been added to the school radio station website (greenhillspeaks) for all to see and listen to. The staff of Greenhill School wish to congratulate Mrs. Lloyd for organising and co-ordinating such a fantastic day.
Friends of Greenhill
Saturday saw the Friends of Greenhill hold their annual Jazz Night at Cresswell Quay. They were blessed with one of the rare summer evenings of this year, there being a day's grace from the rain. The sun shone and the evening was warm and pleasant. This ensured that there was a grand turnout. Thanks to the Lawrenny Sailing Club, who arrived in all their splendour, their boats magnificently decorated, to add to the fun. The car park was full of activities for people to take part in. Thank you to all who donated raffle prizes. The duck race went at an exciting slow pace -the girls in the canoes tried their best to get them flowing, a consensus was held that the baby duck should be the winner, and a prize of a bottle of bubbly and ceramic ducks went to Kevin Harts. The cake stall did a roaring trade, thanks to those who donated cakes - some made by the students themselves, a magnificent spread over two tables, that all got sold. The ladies on the Fajita wraps were kept busy with a steady stream of customers. The food was delicious - a welcome break from burgers. Everyone was in a jolly sociable mood and groups were spread around the car park and pub area, chatting and laughing in the evening sunshine. It was a really pleasing sight to see with everyone enjoying the music provided by the Greenhill Big Band and Jazz Band, who played their hearts out. A big thank you to Neil and the bands for supporting our event. This was the best ever Jazz Night that the Friends have organised and they raised a grand total of £945 clear profit for school funds. Thank you to everyone who helped, donated or just turned up for the fun. Thank you.
