Under 14 hockey tournament, Thursday, December 13, at Sir Thomas Picton: Although the weather was bitter, the squad travelled to Sir Thomas Picton. Our opening match was against Milford Haven School. The team started with determination and dominated the game from start to finish. Ysgol Greenhill created numerous opportunities and chances before a quick break by Amy Taylor and Libby Sheldon to set-up Laura Webber for the first goal. Miss Reynolds was thrilled to see Laura Webber score a fantastic goal from the penalty spot. The second half resulted in an impressive defence, with the defenders moving the ball quickly out of defence for Imogen Childs to pursue an attack from midfield. This resulted in Hollie Humphries attacking down the right wing which created a number of shoots at the Milford Haven goalkeeper. However, the second goal came from a short corner strike from Libby Sheldon. This win inspired the girls for the next match against Sir Thomas Piction.
The match began with both teams determined and motivated to win. Sir Thomas Picton started off very strongly, however, they were no match for Ysgol Greenhill defensive players. Megan Guerreiro, Brittany Rolfe and Jade Rowell knew they had to close down their opposition quickly and that is exactly what they did and Sir Thomas Picton found it very difficult to penetrate through the outstanding defence. On a few occasions when they did, Carys Davies, our goalkeeper, had a number of outstanding saves during the match. With only six minutes left of the first half, our forwards (Laura, Hollie and Tia) opened up the space which allowed Libby Sheldon a shot at goal which resulted in the Sir Thomas Picton goalkeeper making a mistake and resulted in a goal. The second half resulted in brave, fearless and courageous efforts from Ysgol Greenhill defenders, especially Anna Gravey. They knew they had to close down their opposition quickly and that is exactly what they did. Jade, Louise, Megan and Brittany put in some super tackles and marked tightly, while Anna scooped all the ball and passed it wide to the wings -Tia, Hollie, Bethan and Emma. Laura had a tough job up front trying to fight through the strong Sir Thomas Picton defence, but gave her very best effort all the same.
Well done girls for an outstanding performance to win 1-0.
Ysgol Greenhill's third match was against Taskers. Ysgol Greenhill started brightly, but good defensive work kept Tasker's out of our circle. Then Amy, Imogen, Anna and Libby an outstanding midfield unit continued to put pressure on Tasker's defence resulting in Tasker's players making mistakes. Ysgol Greenhill players utilised possession by releasing the ball early to the forwards to make quick breaks which resulted in a goal by Laura Webber, this settled the team, and after half-time, Ysgol Greenhill extended the lead after good passing and movement and a second goal scored by Amy Taylor. A majestic performance by Ysgol Greenhill and two well-taken goals. Three wins resulted in Ysgol Greenhill winners of the pool - Preseli travelled down to play us in the final later that afternoon.
The final match saw the Ysgol Greenhill round off the final with another brave, committed and gutsy performance against a Preseli side packed with talented players.
We knew before the match that this encounter would be the toughest of the season and that this was the final performance that we had all been training and playing toward. Miss Reynolds was absolutely delighted to see the girl's deliver, not the win that we had hoped for, but a display of pure heart, determination and endurance.
Ysgol Greenhill fielded a team of inspiring performances. A confident back-line of Jade Rowell, Megan Guerreiro, Louise Haywood Clewer and Carys Davies absorbed all the pressure from a fast attacking Preseli team. However, a slip in concentration lead to Preseli scoring a goal. Vice-captain Amy Taylor, captain Libby Sheldon and Anna Gravey and Imogen Childs continued to 'dig deep' into themselves to keep producing incredible performances after such intense games before. Ysgol Greenhill were unfortunate not to capitalise on outstanding breaks from the forwards which resulted Ysgol Greenhill losing 1-0 to become runners-up in the Under 14 Pembrokeshire Schools County Hockey Tournament.
