On July 1, Greenhill School held its first large scale Careers Skills Day.

Nine local employers and training organisations took part in bringing careers advice and work experience to the Year 9 students on the Greenhill site.

The day was the first of three that students will participate in to provide them with a range of career ideas and to provide them with relevant information on what employment is available in the local area.

Students chose two workshops to attend, taking part in activities to give them a taste of a wide variety of careers, including surveying with Costain; tiling and plastering with DDS General Builders; caring for the environment with Pembrokeshire National Park. PRP Training, of Pembroke Dock, provided two workshops on caring for others and the health and beauty sectors.

Wyndham Williams from PCC's 5 x 60 team, plus a team of sports trainers and coaches, took a group of students through their fitness paces, with volleyball, tennis and tag rugby activities.

A large team from Murco took over two laboratories to run activities related to the oil industry, where the students took part in an engineering competition.

Andrea Perry gave students experience in working in local government where they took part in a board meeting, taking the opportunity to spend virtual millions on how the council should be run!

Dyfed-Powys Police ran a course on law enforcement, and students enjoyed handcuffing their teachers and learnt about the range of careers available in the police force.

Finally, Michelle Thomas, of Barclays Bank in Pembroke Dock, provided an insight into the many career options in finance and banking.

The feedback from students participating was excellent, and an enjoyable and insightful day was enjoyed by all.

Greenhill students are now looking forward to the next Careers Skills Day to be held for Year 10 on October 21.

Clean Sweep For Cricketers!

Every year, Greenhill enter the cricket competitions for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 and usually do very well; this year was no exception.

Over the last two weeks, each age group won their respective finals to take the Pembrokeshire title. The Year 7 and 9 teams will progress to the national rounds in September and at the beginning of next season will aim for the national finals.

The success of Greenhill cricket can be put down to a commitment at the school to focus curricular and extra curricular time to the sport and the fact that we are situated in the hotbed of Pembrokeshire cricket's finest clubs.

We would like to extend our thanks to those clubs, particularly to Derrick Lloyd and Roger Stanford, of Carew CC and Saundersfoot CC, respectively, who have been so supportive of our cricket programme by preparing superb wickets for us to play on.
