An Environment Club is held every Tuesday after school and at lunchtimes. Members have fun, games, competitions and laughter. They also work on the grounds of Greenhill School doing weeding and planting, so that in the spring they will see a good display of shrubs and baby plants. There are four members, Elliott, Bryony, Ben and Ethan, but the Environment Club are looking for some new members, so why not join from 3.30 to 4.30 (5-ish sometimes). Please contact Ms Spratt for details. Their present competition is about 'Christmas' and on the December 6, they joined a trip to the National Botanical Gardens of Wales for a Christmas Tree Decorating competition (see separate report). The Environment Club is fun, hands-on and extremely rewarding - knowing your little bit can help the planet, so come and join us.

MAPPING THE SEA FLOOR!

On November 9, the geography department at Greenhill was encased in clay! Their special guest Lara Murphy from the Museum of Welsh Life came to show a group of Year 9 students how to Map the Sea Floor. The session was really good fun, as students got to make clay models of the sea floor using GIS (Global Information System) data. Everybody had a great time and learnt something new about the sea that we live beside. Their guest also showed us some creatures of the sea that she brought along. Some of the models are in use in room 804, while others were taken home by their creators.

CHARITY INSIGHT

On Monday and Tuesday, November 27 and 28, Eva Rich visited Greenhill to speak to students in Years 7, 8 and 12. She brought along her guide dog Angie and explained how the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind benefits people with visual difficulties. Both Eva and Angie were warmly received by students and the 'importance' of the charity was recognised. Subsequently, through selling and buying special badges, the students of Greenhill have raised £214 in aid of this worthy cause. Well done everyone and a particular thank you from Eva and Angie.

'Christmas In Germany'

Greenhill School Environment Club and Year 7x4 Geography class have been studying 'Christmas in Germany' since the half-term and have been making German Christmas decorations out of recycled materials. They met on Tuesday afternoons and at lunchtimes in Room 804 where they worked extremely hard. On Wednesday, December 6, the Environment Club and some of the Year 7 students went to the National Botanic Gardens to display what they had made. The students took part in Christmas activities and had a fantastic time. All students behaved impeccably and really enjoyed the day out. Miss Spratt also wants to say a special mention to Bryony and Ethan who have given her lots of help leading up to the competition.

Trip to Cardiff

Year 12 and 13 visited Cardiff recently and stayed at Canolfan y Mileniwm, Caerdydd. A great time was had by all, including an evening of fun at the winter wonderland and morning's shopping in the city centre.

SPORT

With the winter nights seemingly in as soon as the school bell goes these days and coupled with a spell of serious winter weather, our extra curricular sport has been unfortunately limited in recent weeks. The Pembrokeshire Schools Rugby fixtures are halted in December and January as a result of the above, but the football has been booming. Welsh Schools Football unfortunately has no support compared to the financial backing from the WRU and cup/league organisation of the schools committee, but the football that has been organised has been a great source of success. Greenhill entered all five competitions at Under 12, 14, 16, 18 and under 19 level, and in recent weeks, have won all Pembrokeshire finals with the exception of the Under 16s. This I feel is a great credit to our students and it also shows the quality of football provided by the local football clubs in the Greenhill area. With our county champions now in the West Wales stages of the national competitions, the games are coming thick and fast against opposition from the Carmarthenshire and Llanelli area - all match reports will follow. The bad weather that closed the school last week has caused some major damage to the school changing rooms. The damage has been isolated in the shower area of both boys and girls changing rooms. Contractors have temporarily solved the problem by sectioning off the shower area so that the changing rooms are now functioning without the showers. As a result, we will alter the lessons to exclude rugby and hopefully we can continue without too much disruption until a permanent solution is in place.
