PRIDE

On Thursday, October 19, a boxing tournament, of 14 bouts, was held at the De Valance, Tenby, to raise money for the Year 10 PRIDE students (see picture right). The evening started with 11-year-old lads boxing for three one-minute rounds. Shane Baker from Tenby Amateur Boxing Club won his fight. The event was supported by boxers from all over Wales, including Scott (The Hammer) Gammer, a professional boxer and British heavyweight champion, who signed autographs and gave a signed head guard for the students to auction on E- bay. The PRIDE group would like to thank everyone concerned with this tournament, for putting an enormous effort into making the evening a huge success. The sum of £1,020 was raised for the PRIDE students -an excellent result.

BI-ANNUAL OPEN EVENING

Wednesday, October 18, saw Greenhill School open its doors to a steady stream of visitors to its Bi- Annual Open Evening. Visitors were free to wander around the school and examine the work of students, enjoy displays of work, activities and take part in interactive exhibits. All departments participated, including many extra-curricular clubs. The food department used the evening to hold a cook-off challenge to choose a participant for the future chef competition. The winner, Jakita Roach, will represent Greenhill at Carmarthen on November 7; also the runner-up, Jo Hinchliffe, will represent the school at the Rotary Chef Contest early in the new year. The PE Department staged various displays of gymnastics and dance, while Year 11 drama students performed their GCSE production in the Drama Studio. Meanwhile, the school orchestra spent the first part of the evening holding an open rehearsal in the Main Hall, while Friends of Greenhill laid on refreshments. During the evening, Mr. Noble gave a short speech about the workings of the school, concluding with a prize draw, organised by FOG, to win a mountain bike. The winner will be announced and a presentation made at a later date.

Yr Adran Gymraeg - The Welsh Department

Pupils from Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 recently visited the Millennium Stadium for the Wales v Cyprus game, stopping at McArthur Glen en-route. A great evening of fun was had by all and a fantastic result! Lessons were a little quieter the following morning as a number of them had lost their voices as a result of the singing. Da iawn pawb! Pupils studying A-Level Welsh this year have been volunteering their free time to visit the Welsh Language Unit at Tenby Infants School and offer their help. This is a great opportunity for the pupils to work and chat together using their Welsh and gain experience at the same time. Greenhill would like to thank their partner primary schools for allowing them the opportunity to do so - diolch yn fawr. Later this month, Sixth Form pupils and staff will be visiting the capital again for the Wales v Canada game. Fingers crossed for a good result.

RUGBY

On the Thursday before half-term, the Greenhill Year 7 rugby team travelled away to St. David's for their first away fixture. The squad consisted of many boys who have played the game at club and primary school level, but a number of boys had not played a XV-a-side game before and they showed some real talent. The score was eventually 10 tries to one in our favour, but it was the boys' ability to move the ball and retain possession that really impressed. Man-of-the-match was Jack Murphy, who scored a number of tries and played with some great vision. Squad: Jack Murphy, Dan Muscatt, Tom Law, Elliott Wilson, Richard Simon, Jack Willars, Joe Worley, Toby Rossiter, Ryan Lewis, Corey Morris, Lewys Rich, Max Copley, Calum Weakley, Dan Fairley, Sam Butler and Jamie Holt. Year 8 also played rugby against St. David's and won by nine tries to two.

FOOTBALL

The Year 9 football squad of Jake Roberts, Will Thomas, Curtis Hurlow, Aaron Roberts, Jordan Richards, Greg Lees Griffiths, Rob Fairly, Ashley Smith, Ceri Brace, Oliver Worley, Pat Elliott and Dan Farmiloe, played away to St. David's in the Welsh Cup, winning by seven goals to nil.

FIXTURES

Next week's fixtures are away to Sir Thomas Picton on Wednesday for the 1st and 2nd XV rugby squads and away to Milford on the Thursday for Year 7 and Under 19 football fixtures, plus one other rugby fixture.
