LOWER SCHOOL AWARD EVENING

Wednesday, October 6, saw a large crowd in the main hall, of family and friends of last year's 7, 8 and 9 students, to acknowledge last year's excellent achievements. Welcomed by the head, Mr. C. J. Noble, the students were then introduced and their awards presented by Mr. R. D. Winder. Bob Winder, recently retired deputy head of the school, said how honoured and privileged he was to be asked to make the presentations at what was only the second of the Lower School Award Evenings, that he had helped to instigate. He reflected on his past 20 years at Greenhill before acknowledging the achievements of the pupils before him. He commented on how well they had done in both commitment and achievement. They had attained excellent results over the past year and Year 9 had vastly improved their National Curriculum test results. He spoke of Greenhill as a community and of the many varied activities available, during the school day and considerable opportunities for after-school clubs and events. Concluding his speech, he urged the students "don't stop, keep going," the motivation they have shown, if continued, would promise a bright future.

HOCKEY

Under 18s v Pembroke: On Monday, October 4, Greenhill's under 18 hockey girls played against Pembroke. The girls were slightly discouraged from knowledge that Pembroke were a very strong side and our team were lacking key players due to illness. In response to this, our team, which was not complete, managed to hold them off in the first half, with great defence by Amy John, Steph James and Phoebe Osborne. In the second half, the girls were in good spirits and managed to hold Pembroke to a 0-0 draw. We were all really pleased at this score, everyone played well. 'Good work girls.' Team was Chloe Laing (capt.), Alex Merchant, Sophie John, Kaylie Davies, Jess Froment, Phoebe Osborne, Annie Davies, Steph James, Amy John, Liz Nicholas, Penny Young Under 18s v Sir Thomas Picton: On Thursday, October 7 Greenhill's under 18 hockey girls played their second match of the week against Sir Thomas Picton. The girls felt encouraged from the draw earlier in the week and were ready to play again. Sir Thomas Picton have a few strong county players that we were carefully double marking. Good communication from the Tenby girls led to us having several chances to score, but at half-time the score was 0-0. Penny Young, our goalkeeper, did extremely well defending their shots. Overall, Sir Thomas Picton probably had more possession throughout, but our team did their best and again this resulted in a 0-0 draw. We are very pleased as we've drawn against the two strongest sides in the county. Team was Chloe Laing, Kelly Williams, Kaylie Davies, Annie Davies, Jess Froment, Emily Ruff, Phoebe Osborne, Stephanie James, Amy John, Liz Nicholas, Penny Young.

RUGBY

Greenhill 1st XV v Pembrokeshire College Rugby Academy: After a win versus Pembroke and a defeat verses Taskers, the prospect of playing the unbeaten College team was most certainly a mouth-watering one. The college also had a few ex-Greenhill players, which gave the 1st XV players a number of personal battles in the game. The trademark of both teams so far this season, was of forward dominance and it was clear from the start that this is where the game would be won and lost. The early pattern for the game was of pick and drive from the college, against a big Greenhill defence close to the breakdown, which saw man-of-the-match Rob Tuttle closely followed by Laurens Britts leading the line. Both sides played a kicking game, but it was only Greenhill who profited. With a far superior lineout, the ever-present Ieuan Rowell and Nick Drewitt dominated proceedings by taking 90 per cent of possession in this facet of the set-piece. The first try came from some good ball taken up in midfield by Jonathan Lewis and Lloyd Wilson, allowing Steven Handicott to pick out the powerful Alex Jenkins who ran through the cover from 22 metres out. The second half saw Greenhill turn around with the wind behind them and a 5-0 lead. It was the maturity of Steven Handicott and the precision of his right boot that allowed the forwards to keep moving up-field with the quality chasing of Whitfield, Jenkins and Colley. It was again forward play which set up the second try for Alex Jenkins who ran through the blindside defence to notch up his seventh try of the season. A Handicott penalty sealed the fate of the college to a 13-0 loss, but the grit and determination of the Greenhill team was evident throughout and every player deserves the credit. Team: L. Britts, J. Davies, D. Rowell, T. Jones, I. Rowell, R. Tuttle, P. Woods, A. Jenkins, N. Drewitt, R. Thomas, S. Handicott, J. Lewis, L. Wilson, S. Jenkins, R. Whitfield, D. Colley, D. Cope, L. Davies, T. Dortez, A. Hughes, B. Cole, R. May, S. Foster. Under 15s county rugby: Well done to Luke Dedman, Henry Boot and Rob Colley for their performances in the match versus Pontypool last Saturday. We wish Rob Colley a speedy recovery from his rib injury. Year 7: The Year 7 A and B teams played Taskers at home last Thursday and won by 26-0 and 15-10 respectively.
