Last Thursday, the school opened its doors for a public debate entitled 'Genetic Engineering'. The weather was particularly unkind on that day and as a result, not as many people turned up as hoped. Nevertheless, a spirited and very interesting debate ensued.
Proposing the motion were Professor Anthony Campbell and Year 12 student, Matthew Bonnaud. On the opposing side were Mr. Peter Oeppen and Year 13 student, Jennifer Varallo. Chairing the evening was Mrs. Heather Henry and the guest timekeeper was Dr. Mike Brew, chairman of the governors. Jess Ormonde, of Year 12, introduced everyone to the audience in a most professional manner.
Much research had been undertaken by both teams and the resulting debate was both informative, interesting and well put forward.
Congratulations to all who took part and very many thanks for their valuable time to Professor Campbell, Dr. Brew, Mr. Oeppen and Mrs. Henry, who masterminded and organised the event.
A poll was taken at the beginning of the debate - 40 per cent for and 60 per cent against, and at the end of the evening - 48 per cent for and 52 per cent against.
