hard
at work
Everyone is hard at work: the Drama department are heavily involved in the production of As You Like it which will be performed at The Torch Theatre and also in rehearsals for our own production of the musical Hood which will be performed on February 25-28.
The various orchestras and ensembles are already in tune and have already begun their weekly rehearsals in preparation for the many performers they will be exciting us with this term.
SPORTING SCENE
On the sporting front, all teams are already playing regularly, but news of their progress is rather slow in filtering through!
On September 19, Greenhill's U16 Hockey team played St David's. Greenhill played well, scoring 5 goals in the first half and the final score was 6-1 to Greenhill. The team was Jemma Owen, Deb Nicholas, Chloe Laing, Rebecca Simpson, Jess Ormonde (Captain), Nicola Aston, Holly Watkins, Jess Froment, Gillian Saddler, Amy John, Steph James, Phoebe Osborne and Penny Young. Goal scorers were Holly Watkins, Chloe Laing and Rebecca Simpson and Player of the Match was Nicola Aston. Well done girls!
ADVANCED NOTICE
Thursday, October 17 Open Evening. Everyone welcome to come and see the School and the work that we do there.
CARS ON PREMISES
A number of parents have been transporting their children on to, or from the premises at the beginning and end of the school day - especially when the weather is wet. We would appreciate if parents do not take their children beyond school drive entrances, to avoid placing other students at risk on narrow and congested approaches to the school.
JEANS FOR GENES STARS!
Yesterday (Thursday) saw staff and students at Greenhill School become star supporters of the national Jeans for Genes Appeal by throwing out their usual dress code/uniform, jumping into their jeans and donating £1 each to the appeal.
Proceeds from this annual campaign will help eight national charities, including Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and the Haemophilia Society, to fund vital genetic research to help alleviate and cure childhood genetic disorders.
In the UK, one baby in every 30 is born with a genetic condition or birth defect. There are over 4000 recognised genetic diseases some of which are life threatening and have no current treatment.Over £12 million has been raised by Jeans for Genes since it was launched in 1996.
This year is a celebratory year for the campaign. Earlier this year, little Rhys Evans was successfully treated for a rare and fatal genetic disorder. His treatment was a medical milestone, paving the way for gene therapy to help other patients in the near future.
In the past three years, the school has raised nearly £3,000 for the appeal. Students were encouraged to replace as many items of school uniform by equivalent items of denim eg. school trousers with jeans, school jumper with denim jacket. There were many prizes to be picked up for the 'best dressed' students and staff, smart stickers! For everyone in denim and a 'genetics' quiz for tutor groups during registration.
A special thank you to Woolworths, Tenby for their kind donation of so many prizes.
Supporters of Greenhill School Orchestra
Supporters of Greenhill orchestra held their first meeting of the new academic year on Tuesday, September 24. The attendance was very good, proof that so many people are interested in the orchestra and willing to help raise funds and support in various ways. Thank you to all who attended.
Mr. Rapi continues as chairman, Julia Barnes as secretary, Sue Haines as treasurer and Mrs. Kim Appleby-Jones will be sponsorship secretary. An audit of the sogo accounts has been carried out and a favourable report made. We shall again be seeking people to 'sponsor a desk'. Sogo agreed to purchase for the music department a video of the Urdd Eisteddfod and CD of all the performances at the Royal festival Hall this year.
The June concert in the De Valence had been a roaring success and consequently sogo funds were boosted considerably. Jen Richards was thanked for all her efforts in nominating and promoting Mr. Paul Rapi in his bid to be Classic FM music teacher of the year. He was a finalist thus obtaining a computer and software for the music department's use. The PTA have kindly donated £500 towards the purchase of a new Timpani and Elf have kindly donated a TV to raise the remaining funds for this. A raffle will take place to be drawn at the Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 18.
Mr. Rapi reported that the Chamber Orchestra will be incorporating far more players therefore it will now be known as the Symphony Orchestra. A new work to be written by Colin Touchin, director of music at Warwick University is planned and will be incorporated into the repertoire when ready. There are plans for the orchestra to go on tour to Prague next July (18-25) and to entertain in Blackpool at the International Rotarians conference in April.
The Urdd Eisteddfod will be held in Neath next June and it is hoped the orchestra will be able to enter once again.
Tenby Town Council have requested a concert in the De Valence and this will be on Thursday, April 10, and sogo plan another musical celebration there on Thursday, June 26. A busy and productive year ahead is forecast.
