The Learning Support Department at Greenhill has continued to provide help for pupils in Years 7 and 8 who find reading a challenge. Members of the Learning Support Department, together with students from the Sixth Form, have been listening to pupils read several times a week during tutorial sessions in order to raise literacy standards and to develop the enjoyment of reading. The school is delighted with the progress made by its pupils, and headmaster, Mr. Chris Noble, recently presented the students with their certificates.

The Reading Programme has been organised by Mrs. Andrea Roper and Mrs. Joanne Mount, who would like to thank the librarian, Miss Amanda James, for hosting the reading sessions. All involved wish her well as she leaves Greenhill to follow a new career.

BOOK REVIEW COMPETITION

Over the past months, Year 7, 8 and 9 students of English have been composing book reviews of their favourite books for the library competition. Some fantastic work was produced, which made the judging process particularly difficult. However, the following students were chosen as winners.

Year 7: 1st prize to Charlotte Gyseman; 2nd prize to Joe Pendell.

Year 8s and 9: 1st prize to Sarah Davies, 8 EJP; 2nd prize to Annie Brougham, 8 RLM.

Congratulations to these lucky winners, and many thanks to everybody who took part.

TESTIMONIAL

CRICKET GAME

On Monday night, a team of cricketers from Greenhill challenged Saundersfoot Cricket Club to a match, to celebrate Mr. Thomas's recent retirement. It was a night of revelation, with many of our staff displaying cricketing skills hitherto undisclosed. Bowlers, batters, wicket-keepers: we were a team to behold! Mr. Schofield, particularly, enjoyed the experience, newly fitted with an impressive set of pads!

A hard fought match at the Sports Ground in Saundersfoot eventually saw Greenhill emerge as victors, a fitting tribute to Mr. Thomas, a supporter of Saundersfoot Cricket Club for many years.

Many thanks to all the staff who took part, helping to make the evening such a success.

SPORTS NEWS

Rounders tournament: On Friday, July 12, the Year 7 Rounders Tournament took place in Bush School, Pembroke. Seven different schools took part, and all of them played exceedingly well. The overall winners were the team from Ysgol y Preseli, who, with an excellent team with great skills, managed to beat everyone.

On our team, we had plenty of excellent players. They were: bowlers, Jenna Wright and Vicky Simpson; backstop, Siobhan Cooke; 1st base, Katy Owen; 2nd base, Rachel Lord, 2nd close, Emily Ruff (captain); 3rd close, Vicky Simpson and Jenna Wright; 1st deep, Sita Thomas; 2nd deep, Ann-Marie Dassen; 3rd deep, Rosie Cunningham; reserves, Rosie McGivern and Charlotte Cowper.

The player of the match was shared between Emily Ruff and Siobhan Cooke, who both played extremely well.

Greenhill finished second overall to Ysgol y Preseli.

Year 8 team - Pippa Goodridge, Alex Merchant, Liz Nicholas, Sarah Davies, Amy Williams, Sophie Toy, Kaylie Davies, Laura Evans, Annie Davies (capt.), Emily Wilkins and Hannah Walters were jubilant at the rounders tournament, winning the Year 8 competition.

Easily winning their first game against St. David's by 11-2.5, the Year 8 team went on to win against Milford Haven School and Tasker Milward School, with Taskers giving us quite a game which we won by half a rounder.

With confidence now riding high, the next game was against Fishguard, who we defeated, ensuring a place in the final.

Our opponents were, again, Tasker Milward School and we knew this would prove a challenging encounter. But, we triumphed, beating them 5-2 to win the tournament.

Well done everybody!

Year 10 team - Our Year 10 team comprised Nicola Aston, Freya Rowlands, Jess Ormonde (capt.), Jemma Owen, Deb Nicholas, Kate Lamb, Cheryl Badham, Emma Alcock and Laura Griffiths.

The first match was against Ysgol Bro Gwaun (Fishguard School), which we won 6-3.5. Our second game proved a closer result, with Tasker Milward School proving stiff opponents, eventually winning by half a rounder.

To ensure a place in the semi-finals, we needed to win our third match, which was against St. David's. Luckily we succeeded.

As we came second in our pool, we played Pembroke (who came first in their pool). We won by 5-1, ensuring our place in the final.

Our opponents were Tasker Milward again, who repeated the first meeting with a tough game, again beating us by half a rounder.

Well done to everybody who took part !
