ABERGLASNEY

GARDENS TRIP

A number of former Stepaside School students from Year 7 were invited to the official opening of the beautiful gardens at Aberglasney Hall, Carmarthenshire, on Monday, having spent a great deal of time working on the Aberglasney project whilst in primary school. A rewarding day was had by all.

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

On Monday, we will be hosting the annual Prize Giving Evening, in the Main Hall, starting at 7.30 pm. Our guest speaker this year is Peter Williams, ex-headmaster of the local Junior School. It is sure to be a great evening, so please make every effort to attend.

PERFORMING ARTS

Next Tuesday, March 26, our Orchestra, Concert Band, Ensemble Band and Chamber Orchestra will be taking part in the National Festival of Music for Youth in Haverfordwest. Normally, staged in Aberystwyth, we are very lucky to have the festival so close for the first time at Sir Thomas Picton School. During the festival, our musicians will audition for the annual concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

We wish them all the very best of luck. Go for it, Greenhill!

YEAR 7 AND 8 DISCO

Next Wednesday, March 27, a disco will be held in the Sixth Form Common Room for Year 7 and 8 students, from 7 - 9.30 pm. Admittance can only be gained with a ticket, which cost £2, and can be bought from Room 801 during lunch-time of next week from 1.30 - 1.45pm. Refreshments will be available on the evening.

EASTER QUIZ

A quiz to celebrate Easter will be held in the library on the last day of term, next Thursday, March 28. Starting at 1.45 pm, teams of up to four people are invited to take part. Prizes will be awarded to the first two teams, and the team with the most original name. If you would like to know more, please contact Miss James in the school library.

LAST CHANCE TO READ AROUND THE WORLD

The reading challenge, Read Around the World, finishes on April 19, just a few weeks away. If you are still reading and would like to be entered into the Pembrokeshire Prize Draw, you need to complete the challenge of reading all 12 books by this date. For help with finding books to fit all the categories, please speak to your English or Welsh teacher, or the librarian, Miss James.

The main prize this year is a £50 travel voucher, generously donated by Ocky White Travel, Haverfordwest. There are also a number of runner-up prizes, which will make the effort of competing very worthwhile. So, before it's too late: carry on reading!

HOCKEY

Year 8: On Wednesday, March 6, Ysgol Greenhill School's Year 8 hockey team played against Whitland's Year 8 squad in their last game of the season. Determined to win, the first five minutes saw Greenhill get off to a flying start, with a goal scored by left-midfielder Liz Nicholas. Shortly afterwards, a second goal was scored by Theresa Keight in centre midlfield. Greenhill finished the first half feeling very confident with their 2-0 advantage.

Unfortunately, no goals were scored by Greenhill in the second half, but luckily neither did Whitland, although they put a lot of pressure on our defence.

However, this proved to be no obstacle for our sweeper, Kaylie, Charlie in centre defence, Sophie Toy, left defence, and Zoe Stapleton and Chantelle Tovey in right defence, who quickly moved the ball away from goal.

Also, Zoe Hurlow played exceptionally well in right midfield, as did our goalkeeper, Nicola Jackson, who had a rather quiet game!

Our forwards, Alex, Ani, Pippa and Claudia, also played really well.

Teresa Keight was voted player of the match, but well done to everybody!

Year 8 are now hoping to follow their excellent performance next year in Year 9. Good luck to them.

Year 10: On the same day, Greenhill's Year 10 team played Whitland. The team comprised Deb Nicholas, Liz Nicholas, Jemma Owen, Holly Watkins, Nicola Aston, captain Jess Ormonde, Sophie Evans, Jess Froment, Antonia McBride, Gillian Sadler and Kelly Smith.

It proved to be a tough game, with the score at 1-1 by the end of the first half, our goal courtesy of a well-aimed shot by Holly Watkins.

Greenhill battled on to finish the game with a 3-1 victory, thanks to a goal each by Liz Nicholas and Holly, again.

The player of the match award went to Liz Nicholas, for an excellent game. Well done everyone !
