SIXTH FORM NEWS

Year 12 UCCAS Evening: Next Monday, March 11, we are hosting a Year 12 Higher Education Evening in the school's Main Hall, between 7 and 8 pm. This will be an ideal opportunity for Year 12 students and their parents to consider the higher education options available after completing their A-Level and GNVQ courses, and will help explain the procedure and complication of applying to universities and colleges of higher education through the UCCAS scheme. This will prove an invaluable opportunity to answer any questions that students may have, so do make every effort to attend.

Access Cymru trip to Oxford University: On Thursday, March 14, a number of students in Year 12 will travel to Oxford University to participate in the 'Access Cymru' event, which is designed to encourage students from Wales to apply to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It will help banish the mystique that surrounds these two colleges, and help students to feel more confident about looking to these colleges as the location of their higher education. If you would like more information, please speak to Mrs. Jones, Head of Sixth Form.

Year 12 Parents' Evening: This is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19 at the school's Sixth Form Centre. The first appointments will begin at 4 pm, right through until 6.30 pm. The normal appointments procedure applies. We look forward to seeing you there.

Health and Social Care: A number of GNVQ Health and Social Care students travelled to Withybush Conference Centre on Tuesday.

DRAMA CLUB

Now that 'Confusions' has been and gone, the Drama Club has re-opened its doors to all would-be thespians in Years 7-9. Held in the Drama Studio on Wednesdays, between 3.30 and 4.30 pm, it is a very worthwhile opportunity to develop acting skills and meet new people. Miss Rees has all the details, if you would like to know more.

WORLD BOOK DAY

This year, World Book Day is celebrated next Thursday, March 14. Designed to highlight books and reading, it is an ideal opportunity for students, staff and all our friends to get reading.

In school, there will be a number of activities to celebrate the day: book quizzes and book word searches in the library, as well as a project to create our own book of recommended books, incorporating reviews to friends of recommended books by both students and staff. It's sure to contain some interesting reviews, but will, hopefully, encourage our students to read books they would not otherwise consider.

SCHOOL BANK

This opened again on Wednesday lunch-time in Room 604, run by our Year 11 students. If you would like to open an account, a number of incentives are available to encourage you: such as an electronic personal organiser. Perhaps you could start saving for Christmas, or for that new computer game; this is certainly the easiest way of making sure that you set aside a bit of money each week or month. Please see Mr. Pattenden if you would like to know more.

ARTS CLUB CONCERT

This was held in the Main Hall last night, and was a feast for the audience. Once again, our talented musicians delighted all present, and provided a wonderful evening of entertainment. Bravo!

GIRLS HOCKEY

Pembrokeshire County Hockey Tournament: Our Year 8 hockey squad recently participated in the County Hockey Tournament and played exceptionally well, finishing up in second place.

The first game of the tournament was against Fishguard School, which Greenhill won 3-0, with goals scored by Alex Merchant, Annie Davies and Liz Nicholas.

Sadly, our second game wasn't as good, as we were beaten 3-0 by Tasker Milward School, Haverfordwest.

However, this didn't stop our girls, as they went on to win 3-0 against Pembroke School, with goals scored by Alex, Theresa Keight and Liz.

Our final game was against Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, and Claudia Hinchliffe scored, enabling us to win 1-0.

The team comprised: Liz Nicholas (capt.), Annie Davies, Claudia Hinchliffe, Alex Merchant, Zoe Hurlow, Theresa Keight, Sophie Toy, Rachel Mathias, Kayleigh Davies, Harriet Griffin, Zoe Stapleton, Nicola Jackson, Natasha Turton, Alex Powell and Charlotte Ratcliffe. Well done, girls.

Greenhill Year 9 v Queen Elizabeth Maridunum School, Carmarthen: On Thursday, February 28, our Year 9 hockey team travelled to Carmarthen to play Maridunum School's Year 9 team. We arrived feeling confident and when Maridunum started with the first centre, we got into the game. The first half proved disappointing, as we failed to put 100 per cent into the game, and the first half ended in a 0-0 draw.

Buoyed up by the determination to improve matters, Chloe Laing scored a goal in the opening minutes of the second-half, putting pressure on Maridunum and boosting our confidence. This resulted in another goal, brilliantly executed by Stephanie James on the wing, who crossed through to Chloe, who had Kelly Furlong in her field of vision, and she smacked the ball into goal. We scored one more goal, before the final whistle, the finishing score a well-deserved 3-0 to us. Everybody played really well: congratulations team!

The team comprised: Chloe Laing (capt.) as centre-forward; Kelly Furlong, left-wing; Nina Parker, right-wing; Stephanie James, centre-midfield; Lib Roberts, left-midfield; Phoebe Osborne, right-midfield; Amy John (vice-capt.), centre-defence; Jess Froment, left-defence; Katy McCaig, right-defence; Laura Griffiths, sweeper; Penny Young, goal and Fiona MacKenzie.

Year 10 v Queen Elizabeth Maridunum Year 10: On the same afternoon, our Year 10 hockey team played Maridunumís Year 10 squad. The final score was a resounding victory of 6-0 to Greenhill, with goals scored by Jemma Owen, a brace by Holly Watkins and a hat-trick by Kate Lamb. The game was very well played by Greenhill, well done everyone. Voted 'Player of the Match' was Nicola Aston.

The full team comprised: Kate Lamb, Jemma Owen, Debbie Nicholas, Nicola Aston, Jessica Ormonde, Holly Watkins, Keira Bratcher, Antonia McBride, Liz Nicholas, Gillian Sadler and Kelly Smith.

BOYS' UNDER 19s SOCCER

The Under 19s soccer team faced the tough task of travelling to Bangor to play in the last 16 of the Welsh Cup. On paper, Greenhill had the talent, and it showed in this thrilling fixture. Due to the long journey, Greenhill arrived late and had little time to prepare themselves, for what would be the game of their lives.

Gareth Hughes captained the side, and led his troops from the front with some bone-shaking tackles. It was a tense start, and the boys struggled to settle into a rhythm. The Bangor side were soon into their stride, though, and played some wonderful football, putting Greenhill under pressure from very early on. The defence battled and saw off a number of attacks led by James Longster in the heart of the back four. Andrew Prout and Dominic Lamb were backing up well, getting in some important tackles, but disaster struck in the 21st minute as Bangor took the lead through their nippy striker.

Greenhill now had to lift their game, and they did, with Damien Keight masterminding the midfield alongside Neilson Cole, with the through ball working a treat. Adam Thorne and Tommy James used their blistering pace to full effect, but were lacking that crucial final finish. The teams were evenly matched, both making numerous attempts at goal, but the keepers were on top.

Half-time arrived and Greenhill were left feeling frustrated, but a change in fortune occurred in the second half, with Greenhill getting off to a flier with Adam Thorne breaking the Bangor defence with a brilliant solo effort from 20 yards. Greenhill dominated, using the flanks well with David Day-Jones and Robbie Vincent, but just couldn't find the all-important goal.

Substitutions were made, with Phil Cole, Sam Coleman and Geraint Prince all coming on.

Extra-time was looming and both teams were tiring, but Greenhill remained on top and David Day-Jones nearly clinched it with a fierce right-footer which struck the post.

The whistle was blown, and extra-time had to be played. Inspiration was needed from someone and sadly it came in the form of the nippy Bangor striker who completed his hat-trick with two quick goals.

The Greenhill team couldn't believe it and were devastated. The game was lost, but it was a performance Greenhill could be proud of. Unlucky this time, boys.

The team comprised: Wolly, Gareth Hughes (capt.), Dominic Lamb, James Longster, Andrew Prout, Robbie Vincent, Neilson Cole, Damien Keight, David Day-Jones, Adam Thorne, Tommy James, with substitutes Phil Cole, Sam Coleman, Geraint Prince and coach Mr. Oliver.

COUNTY FOOTBALL

Last Tuesday, February 26, was the date of the beginning of the Pembrokeshire County Year 8/9 Football League, played at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest. Our boys team won against Tasker Milward with a commanding 3-0 final score, whilst our girls team played two games, losing 1-0 to Sir Thomas Picton, and again losing 1-0 against Tasker Milward School. Better luck next time, girls.

On Wednesday this week, our First XV played in the first of three play-offs at home to Mynydd Bach Comprehensive, Heol Ddu, Swansea. Report to follow.

Next Wednesday, our First XV will be playing away to St. David's College, Roath, Cardiff, in the quarter-final of the Welsh Cup. Good luck, boys. Hopefully success in these play-offs will determine forthcoming games.

Yesterday, our Year 7A and 7B and Year 8 rugby teams played fixtures.

Next Thursday, our Year 9 and Under 18s teams will take part in the Pembrokeshire Seven-a-Side Tournament. Reports to follow, but we wish them all well.
