LIBRARY
CHRISTMAS QUIZ
The atmosphere in the library was as highly charged as a Van de Graaf generator last Friday for the lunch-time Christmas quiz. Eight teams of four assembled to pit their wits against the question master, and discover who was the cleverest of them all!
Despite stiff competition, the winners were deemed to be 'The Legends', answering all the questions correctly. In second place were Spike Ball (no idea where the name comes from!) and in third, the ambitiously named 'The Exterminators'. Very Christmassy!
So, some answers: it was Albert who first introduced the Christmas tree to the UK; a magi is a wise man; Nadolig Llawen is the Welsh for Merry Christmas; St. Nicholas was the original Santa Claus; Auld Lang Syne is the Scottish song traditionally sung on New Year's Eve; and the 'Boxing Day Swim' takes place each year in Tenby.
Thanks to everybody who took part, and helped make it such a good laugh. Let's hope the losing Year 10 team can get over their disappointment in time for the turkey dinner on Christmas Day. Better luck next time, boys!
CHARITY DAY
An excellent day of fund-raising and fun was had by all at Greenhill yesterday in the annual, and much anticipated, Charity Day. From the Tinsel Runners who completed a circuit around Tenby, to the Mince Pie eaters (all in the name of charitee!), to the Battle of the Bands, the quiz competitors and all other students who helped to raise money for the charities chosen by the students themselves, a huge thank you. Thanks also to all our parents, and friends who donated money by sponsoring our activities.
Amnesty International, Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, Tenby's Avenue Centre and the New York Firemen's Widows Benevolent Fund will all benefit from the money raised in school yesterday.
The total amount raised is yet to be confirmed, but it looks as though it was a particularly successful year.
Thank you everyone.
READ AROUND THE WORLD
A number of students were this week presented with certificates for reading up to six books for this year's reading challenge, and also to two students who have already completed the challenge by reading a total of 12 books. You will remember that the challenge began in October, and since then has proved a huge hit, particularly with our readers in Years 7 and 8.
Proud to receive their half-way certificates were: Kurt Smith, Charlotte Devine, Kevin Probert, Scott Helmich, Emily Ruff, Rob Colley, Bethan Thomas, Lauren Williams, Jade Evans, Louise Welch, Teresa Keight, Stacey Thomas, Scott Davidson, Rebecca Taylor, Sophie Beare, Bethany Bonnaud, Matthew Watkins, Dickon Morris, Sarah Howitt, Paul Dalling and Keeley Harris. Well done.
Kurt Smith and Charlotte Devine also received their final Return Ticket Certificate to show that they have completed the challenge. Congratulations, and well done to you two.
Read Around the World continues until April, so there is still plenty of time for our challengers to complete their reading tour of the world, in both English and Welsh. If anyone needs any help in selecting books for the challenge, please see Miss James in the library, or their English teacher. But, most importantly, keep on reading!
WEST WALES BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
The West Wales Schools Under 14 Basketball Championships took place at Tenby Leisure Centre on Wednesday, December 12. The competing schools were Greenhill School, Tasker Milward, Milford and Queen Elizabeth Maridunum.
Greenhill opened the championships by playing Milford. They sprinted into the lead, with Dan Colley scoring six quick points. They kept the pressure on due to good rebounding by Colley, Adam Ball, Adam Hughes and Bruce Tasker. This contributed to the good handling skills of Mo Sofan. The half-time score was 16-2 to Greenhill.
In the second-half, all the squad played and Greenhill ran out easy winners by 22-4.
Greenhill's second game was against Maridunum who had just beaten tournament favourites Tasker Milward. After a slow start, Adam Ball scored three points to settle the nerves and together with Dan Colley built up an 11-5 interval lead.
The second-half was similar to the first, with Greenhill dictating play. They eventually won the match by 19-9, which set up a thrilling final game with Tasker Milward.
Greenhill knew that if they beat Taskers then they would be West Wales champions.
Once again, Greenhill made a tentative start, with baskets being hard to come by. The first-half ended with Greenhill being in front by 6-0.
They extended their lead in the second-half to 16-0, with Mo Sofan scoring six of the points. Taskers then scored two baskets near the end of the match to make the final score 16-4 in Greenhill's favour.
This now makes Greenhill West Wales champions and they go through to the knockout stages of the Welsh Cup.
This was a magnificent effort by all the squad.
Squad: Adam Ball, Dan Colley 14 pts; Mo Sofan 13; Bruce Tasker, Adam Hughes 6; Aran Torok, Ben Smith 2; Ian Gower, Ollie Johnson, Aaron Penikett, Theo Cowan, James Saunders.
