All end of school years are busy and 2001 was no exception.

SPORTS

While it took two days, a week apart, to complete the school sports, pupils enjoyed competing in the Urdd Mabolgampau, District Sports and County Sports.

Both the Urdd Mabolgampau and the District Sports were held on the Town Moor during some warm, fine weather, the Urdd event on a Monday afternoon and the District track events on a Thursday morning. Unfortunately, rain prevented the field events from being held.

Both events, however, were colourful and competitive, at an individual level, with certificates being presented for first, second and third places only.

Ten pupils travelled to Haverfordwest on July 11 to compete in the County Athletics meeting. As a result, two of the school teams were selected to take part in the inter-counties athletics heat at Carmarthen. Michael Jones came second in the shot putt and Carys Owen was fourth in the girls 100m sprint.

Other competitors were Kyle Quartermaine, Joe Allen, Madeleine Hamilton, Laura Wilson, Rachel Crowley, Sophie Gibson, Robbie Palmer, Rhydian Bell.

STONE SCULPTURE

Fifteen senior pupils were given a unique experience just before the end of term. Elvis Mamvura and George Mubayi, both from Zimbabwe, shared their artistic talents and developed the skills of sculpting from stone.

Each pupil chipped away at a lump of rock and with help transformed it into a unique shape, which was then rubbed, smoothed and polished into its final aesthetic form.

The occasion also provided a wonderful cultural and linguistic exchange enjoyed by everyone.

VISITS

Various classes enjoyed a number of visits. Pupils from Dosbarth enjoyed and appreciated a reading of his books by Welsh author Michael Harvey at Haverfordwest Library.

Dosbarth 3 and Class 3 experienced pond dipping and woodland nature walks, on separate occasions, at Pentre Ifan Farm, while Class 1 visited Haverfordwest Fire Station and Scolton Manor.

Thirty-one senior pupils enjoyed a week of activities at Pembrokeshire Watersports Centre. The opportunity to experience and enjoy kayaking, canoeing, sailing, rafting, problem solving and orienteering was appreciated by everyone who attended.

Both Year 5 and 6 enjoyed day's activities, on separate occasions, at Whitland Secondary School.

These were part of a familiarisation and introduction process in preparation for transfer to secondary school.

Also part of the summer programme was a visit to Greenhill Drama groups who enthralled junior pupils with their group performance.

The school was pleased to welcome next term's intake of four-year-old pupils for a morning visit. During their stay, they were introduced to their buddies who will help them through their first week of school in September.

SWIMMING GALA

The following pupils helped make up the Narberth area swimming squad who competed in the County Swimming Gala on July 11. Competition was fierce and everyone who took part showed a high level of skill and commitment. Thanks are extended to all staff at the pool for their time and effort in preparing the group: Geraint Nicholas (butterfly and relay); Carys Owen (third breaststroke, relay); Catrin Bowen (second backstroke, relay); Jodie Warlow (relay); Ffion Thomas (relay); Stephen Bradfield (backstroke, relay).

SAFE CYCLING

Year 6 pupils have received their safe cycling lessons from Mr. Gibson at a recent assembly. They were put through their paces in the playground and on the road, before being tested on the Highway Code.

DISCO

A final leavers' disco was organised by the PTA and Year 5 and 6 pupils were joined by many of last year's leavers who enjoyed being back in the school. The PTA provided hot dogs and drinks for all who attended.

The school year drew to a close for pupils on Friday, July 20. The 34 Year Six pupils now anticipate a new start at secondary level, 11 transfer to Preseli, one to Greenhill and 22 to Whitland.
