Work has begun on a new traffic and amenity improvement scheme designed to increase safety and facilities for patients, visitors and staff arriving at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest. The new scheme includes an undercover drop-off zone for patients, visitors and emergency vehicles, a safer one-way traffic system, an on-site bus-stop and additional pelican crossings plus extra car parking spaces. It is anticipated that the work will continue until the end of March. Said the director of operations for Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust, Mrs. Mags Barnaby: "These improvements will allow drivers to drop patients and visitors off under cover close to the main entrance without causing traffic hazards. "Pedestrians will benefit from safer access via a closer bus-stop and pelican crossings, emergency vehicles will have dedicated parking outside the main door and staff will have extra car parking. "All this adds up to better safety and improved facilities for people using Withybush Hospital and we are grateful for everyone's patience while these works are carried out." The improvement scheme incorporates: • An undercover lighted pathway from the main entrance to the new outpatients entrance with six public drop-off spaces for visitors and relatives. • A one-way traffic system which enters from the Fishguard Road and exits onto the retail park road. The road between the two main car parks will also be one way. This will reduce hazards created by cars manoeuvring at the main entrance. • A new on-site bus stop for visitors with pelican crossings leading across the car park to the undercover canopy. • Two designated drop-off zones for emergency vehicles and ambulance patient transport services. • A bespoke drop-off point for large goods vehicles. • Improved car parking with an extra 57 car parking spaces. The scheme is being carried out in partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council and is funded by Welsh Assembly Government.
