Whitland looks set to be the location for a new £1 million sports centre, to be situated on the grounds of Ysgol Dyffryn Taf.
The plans are in their early stages, with detailed plans and management plans still to be drawn up.
The scheme is yet to apply for planning permission from Carmarthenshire County Council. The council has, however, secured provisional funding from the New Opportunity Funding under the Government's initiative to bring first class sporting facilities to communities across the country.
The money has been earmarked and will provide 100 per cent funding to the scheme once plans are drawn up and permission is granted.
Ysgol Dyffryn Taf is one of the largest schools in West Wales, with over 1,000 pupils, and one of the very few not to have sporting facilities of this standard on its doorstep.
The sports hall will be accessible to Dyffryn Taf pupils and the wider community, providing sports facilities such as fitness area, badminton courts, large indoor sports hall and, hopefully, a community room.
Mr. Geoff Davies, deputy head at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, said: "Plans are in the early stages, but things are looking good."
He added that this venture would be another link with the school to the community as a whole and would be an excellent acquisition for Whitland as a whole.
