Families bereaved by death on our roads are now being offered a service thanks to a joint project involving the charity Victim Support and Dyfed Powys Police.

Specially trained Victim Support volunteers are now able to offer emotional support and practical advice to families and close friends to help them through the very stressful time. The service complements the work of police family liaison officers, extending the period in which support is available.

"The sudden death of a loved one can leave people in shock at a time when important decisions have to be made," said Peter Gilbert, manager of Dyfed Victim Support. "Our Road Death service aims to provide help at a crucial time with information and advice about the coroner's court, insurance claims and police procedures for instance, as well as trying to offer some comfort in the weeks after the tragedy took place."

Victim Support is an independent charity and, though working in co-operation with the police, its service is free and confidential.

Chief Inspector Nigel Davies, of Dyfed Powys Police, said: "We are pleased to work in partnership with Victim Support in this new vital service for the public."

Any person who would like information about the service which is available in Dyfed and Powys should contact their local Victim Support office or service co-ordinator Colin Morgan on 01686 624131.
