President Robbie Burns recently had the very pleasant duty of inducting a new member of Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club. She is Mary Adams, a health administrator, who lives in Tavernspite.

In welcoming her into Rotary, he said how delighted he was to induct the first new member during his year of office, with the hope that there would be many more.

Robbie was also delighted to welcome the guest speaker for the evening, Guto Harries, who had been invited to speak about his experiences in Patagonia during a two-week visit he made in 2012 as one of 20 representatives of the Urdd from South Wales.

In a fascinating and very skilled presentation, Guto kept his audience enthralled in telling the story of his very busy two weeks in Patagonia. In what he described as a life-changing experience he recounted with enthusiasm meeting many descendants of the original Welsh settlers, including taking part in an Eisteddfod where he won first prize in the recitation competition, as well as singing in a choir and as part of a duet.

His talk was filled with many fascinating facts, such as eating Welsh cakes and bara-brith in the foothills of the Andes. He thanked the Rotary Club for their donation which had helped him reach his target of £2,100 fund-raising which enabled him to go.
