A new portrait of the young Dylan Thomas has been found and acquired for the boathouse at Laugharne. Carmarthenshire County Council's arts service bought the painting by famous artist Alfred Janes who once shared a flat with Dylan. Dylan had met Janes, who was a few years older than him, through his school friend composer Daniel Jones. They shared a flat in London for a time during the 1930s and Janes later painted three portraits of the poet - however, the newly found oil sketch had been previously unknown. The portrait was sold at auction and arrived at the boathouse through the kindness of John Latter, of Newcastle Emlyn. Its original owners were related to the artist and family tradition had it that it was a portrait of the very young Dylan painted by Alfred Janes. Arts development officer Eleri Retallick said: "We are delighted to have this painting which will add to the visitor experience at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse." The painting is in need of cleaning and conservation before it goes on show. Staff will also be carrying out research to find out more about it. Regeneration executive board member, Clr. Clive Scourfield, said: "This is a real find and we are grateful for the generosity of Mr. Latter for giving it to the boathouse so that many people can enjoy it."
