John Uzzell Edwards is exhibiting his newest paintings in the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery from tomorrow (Saturday) until September 2.
John, who now lives and paints in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, is delighted to be showing here again.
He has strong links to Tenby and Pembrokeshire. He and his wife Mary lived in Tenby in a studio they renovated on the North Beach in the late 1960s and 70s, and he is constantly being drawn back to the seaside town he has always loved.
His previous exhibition of paintings at the museum ran through the millennium year 2000 where his paintings, at that time inspired by Celtic manuscripts and holy books, lit up the gallery, proving popular with residents and visitors alike.
This new exhibition of large canvases reveals a sequence of inspirations, which continue from the manuscript theme, to include chapel names, and on through quilts to more abstract studies, and one smaller work which grew from what he reveals is a canvas he used to wipe his brushes on!
John who was born in Deri, in the Rhymney Valley, has always used his Welsh heritage as inspiration for his paintings.
As he says: "Wales is my canvas, it's what I know."
The resulting exhibition is a feast of colour and texture and shows a lifetime of inspiration and hard work by one of Wales' most dedicated artists.
