THE Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace in Pembrokeshire has decided to recommend to the Lord Chancellor a number of appointments this year and wants to encourage applications from a wide cross-section of the local community.

Chairman of the committee, Mr. Steve Watkins, explained: "We had a tremendous response last year when we asked for potential candidates to apply, and we are hoping for a similar result this time.

"The Lord Chancellor requires that each magistrates' bench should broadly reflect the community it serves.

"It is the job of our committee to recommend to him candidates for appointment and we are anxious to ensure they are representative of our community in Pembrokeshire."

Six new magistrates were appointed last year, but there are likely to be no more than three appointment in 2004.

Mr. Watkins stressed that the committee was particularly keen to encourage younger people to apply.

He added: "Being a magistrate is a very challenging and demanding activity, but it is very fulfilling. It is an important role and, in fact, one of the cornerstones of our society."

Anyone interested in being considered should contact Mr. Bryn Parry-Jones, secretary to the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee, on 01437 776533 for information and a set of application forms.

Completed applications need to be returned by 5 pm on Thursday, February 19.
