Members and guests of the Royal Air Forces Association, Tenby and District, gathered recently in St. Julian's Church for the re-dedication of a plaque which was originally situated on the wall of the Tenby Old Pier and was unveiled by Flt. Lt. W. E. Probert on June 13, 1993. Due to its rapid deterioration in the teeth of the elements and following an excellent refurbishment, by Flt. Lt. Jack Docherty, it was agreed with the Rector, Rev. Canon David Jenkins B.A.LTH, that its new location should be in this ancient seaman's church, acknowledging the strong links which were forged between the Royal Air Force mariners and local seamen of the harbour fraternity. The original dedication was carried out by the late Ven. Glyn Renowden CB, former Chaplain in Chief (Air Vice Marshall) Royal Air Force, and it was pleasing that his widow, Mary, was able to attend to witness the re-dedication ceremony carried out by Canon Jenkins. The inscription on the plaque reads: No.48 Airsea Rescue Unit 1941-1945 Marine Craft Detachment 1940-1985. Erected by RAFA Tenby to commemorate the establishment of the RAF Marine Craft Service in Tenby Harbour and the relationship which existed over the years 1941-1985 with the people, of Tenby. Two launches were sunk through enemy action and the crew of a Sunderland were rescued by HSL 144, captained by Fl.Lt. W. E. Probert.
