As of tomorrow (Saturday), Saundersfoot Buggy Club has found a new home at Tenby Leisure Centre.

Saundersfoot Buggy Club (SBC) was formed in 1986 to race electric 1/10th scale radio controlled cars and began racing indoors in Pembroke.

The following year a new venue was found at the old school buildings in Westfield Road, Saundersfoot. However, this, too, proved too small for the growing club and another new location was found at Saundersfoot's Regency Hall, with around 25 members racing on a regular basis every Saturday morning throughout the winter months.

SBC catered for off-road electric cars, which, as their name suggests, are primarily designed to race outdoors off-road.

With this in mind, an outdoor venue was found at the Recreation Ground, Kilgetty, with club meetings held on Wednesday evenings during the summer months and attracting enthusiasts from as far afield as Cardigan, Carmarthen, Pembroke and Haverfordwest.

The club also hosted Welsh Radio Car Association (WRCA) championship race meetings, bringing in around 100 competitors from other WRCA clubs, including Swansea, Neath, Cardiff, Cardigan, Abergavenny and Caldicot.

Indoor meetings were also held at Clarbeston Road Village Hall.

Due to problems with the Kilgetty venue beyond SBC's control, another venue was found at Little King's Caravan Park, Ludchurch, which proved ideal for the club as competitors could be fully catered for on-site.

In 1993, the club hosted race meetings for the WRCA, Radio Race Car International and, for the first time in Wales, a two-day British Radio Car Association two-wheel/four-wheel drive electric 1/10th off-road R/C meeting, with 120 competitors from all over Britain attending.

In 1996, a temporary venue was found at Withybush showground, Haverfordwest, where the club held another RRCI and WRCA championship meetings.

The following year the club was on the move again, when the Ludchurch venue changed ownership.

Full facilities were offered at the Pembrey Race Circuit near Llanelli, which allowed the SBC to change the class of racing to include 1/8th scale 4WD rallycross cars powered by 3.5cc nitro methanol-burning engines.

Producing 2.4bh at 36,000 rpm, these cars are capable of attaining speeds of up to 60 mph, and in 1997 and '98, the Saundersfoot club hosted rounds of the British National Championships.

In 1998, the club also hosted a round of the BRCA 1/5th scale Touring Car Championships on a tarmac on-road circuit at Pembrey, with cars powered by 22cc petrol, strimmer-type engines producing an amazing 70 mph.

However, this was the last of the national meetings hosted by SBC as, due to work commitments by club officials, and the drop-off in the number of racers finding other interests, further meetings were not viable.

The club welcomes electric battery powered radio controlled cars to race indoors at its new venue at Tenby Leisure Centre and hopes to find a new outdoor venue in the near future for off-road electric and nitro powered cars.

The club's association with the Leisure Centre kicks-off tomorrow (Saturday) with a radio controlled car demonstration, starting at 2 pm.

You can pop along and see the professionals race, bring your own cars and race each other, or just discuss tips and make new friends.

From Saturday, January 26, a regular club meeting will be held at the Leisure Centre from 10 am to 12 noon.

If you like motorsport, why not pop along and actually participate in an exciting scaled down form of racing.
