In the absence, due to illness, of president Pat Davies, Jean Williams chaired the meeting of New Hedges WI on April 13. Jean welcomed everyone and the meeting commenced with the singing of Jerusalem. Birthday wishes were extended to the 'birthday girls' and secretary Frances Phillips read out the report of the March meeting. Frances also read out Pat's report of the Wales AGM which she had attended. Jean said how much those members who had attended the 'informal' bar meal, at Wisemans Bridge, had enjoyed it, even though the weather had been terrible. She also congratulated two members, Sheila Meads and Eunice Parkes, on coming first and second in the 'Starters' competition at the heats of the Dinbych Group meeting and Eunice for coming third in the finals - well done girls. The newsletter was read through, dates and venues noted. Then the demonstrator for the evening was introduced, Miss Helen Thomas, who demonstrated the process of making stained glass. This proved fascinating as Helen showed how first you have to draw your pattern, cutting the glass and grinding it down and soldering the copper foil on the finished pattern. Helen had brought patterns of her finished articles and members were filled with admiration for this talented young lady. Jean proposed the vote of thanks. After a welcome cup of tea, Helen judged the competition for a decorated Easter egg. The winner was Eunice Parkes (who kindly donated her winning egg as a raffle prize - lucky winner was Joan Rees), second and third were Josie Brown and Winifred Hewlings. Jean had devised a light-hearted quiz, which everyone enjoyed, and after the singing of both National Anthems, another happy evening ended for New Hedges WI.
