Hooray for the Hedgehogs! On October 14, the first match of the new season in the Friendly League was held in New Hedges Village Hall.

The opposition was the Pembroke Dock club and the result was an excellent win for the home team, the score being 27-12, earning the club eight points. Arthur Sims beat his opponent in fine style in the singles with a win 10-0. The doubles lost 7-3, the threes won 9-2 and the fours won 6-3.

The home team's success was crowned when Pat Horne, the New Hedges club treasurer, won the raffle prize of a bottle of wine! This was some consolation for Pat who was playing doubles with Iris White; she is still recovering from a right arm injury. Iris also is still having pain with her wrist following a break some time ago. Although both were obviously not playing to their own ability they put on a good performance. Pat is persevering with playing left-handed and is making excellent progress.

One of our newer members, Anne Pugh, has just broken her arm, but fortunately it is not her bowling arm! Anne was developing into a very good bowler and with Tony Croft won the first round of the club doubles competition this year. We wish her, and Denny, who began bowling with Anne, but has since been unwell, speedy recoveries.

The New Hedges club adheres to its notion of friendliness and so does not have fixed teams for matches as do most other clubs. Those who wish to play put their names down on a list and Joan, the club captain, allocates their positions on the day. On this occasion the threes comprised Joan, Margaret and Queenie. In the fours were Dorothy, John, David and Bill.

The previous week there was a friendly match with the Hundleton club which the New Hedges club won. The format was changed to teams of three, and everyone enjoyed themselves.
