Work has nearly been completed on converting the disused former Ministry of Defence building situated on the pier at Tenby harbour.
The Tenby harbour yacht station and harbour office will incorporate many new facilities not previously catered for in Carmarthen Bay.
The aim of the Pembrokeshire County Council project is to encourage more yachts and pleasure cruisers to visit the area. Previously, the majority of craft on passage from Swansea or Cardiff would head for the Milford Haven waterway to take advantage of facilities available there.
The new accommodation comprises a well-equipped kitchen and dining facility; a comfortable sitting area, shower, toilet and washing and drying facilities.
There is also office accommodation for the harbour manager and his assistant, two store rooms, and a spacious general meeting room which will accommodate around a dozen people.
It is also hoped that new facilities will encourage visiting yachts people to extend their stay, safe in the knowledge that they can come ashore and use the facilities for a reasonable fee.
An additional 10 outer moorings have also been laid in the bay where vessels that cannot 'dry out' can be moored. Their crews can then come ashore and use the facilities.
Tenby often has visiting flotillas, with the crews now also having the opportunity to relax and socialise away from their sometimes cramped onboard conditions.
It is anticipated that this additional facility for Tenby harbour will open up opportunities for all sorts of events linked to sailing, which in turn will enhance the visitor experience of Tenby, thereby strengthening the tourism product on offer.
Harbourmaster, Matt Broadhurst is confident that plenty of interest will be shown once he has advertised in the yachting magazines in April, and also through his existing contacts via the Harbourmaster's Association.
It is hoped to open the new facility in early April.
