THE NEW exhibition opening at Oriel Queens Hall Gallery, Narberth, tomorrow (Saturday), at 6 pm, is called 'Pembrokeshire Artists'.

John Addyman, Roy Ayres, Elizabeth Haines, Philip Muirden and Susan Sands were invited to show some of their work based on Pembrokeshire landscape and seascape, not in the all too familiar 'pretty postcard' genre, but based on their own strong individual styles.

John Addyman's work is based on rock formations and structure of the landscape, and he uses subtle watercolour and drawing and also ceramic forms in such a way that redefines space.

Roy Ayres celebrates the sea and land with a bold use of colour and shapes using watercolour and gouache, to produce almost abstract chunks of Pembrokeshire.

Elizabeth Haines captures the mystery and character of the landscape by combining layers of paint and different media scraped on and off until the magic happens and the work becomes complete.

Philip Muirden combines his images of boats with a human and social context, and in this exhibition we can appreciate his drawing skills as well as the powerful and moving paintings.

Susan Sands is a great one for experimenting and she has used collage and mixed media to produce some strong images of rocks and scenes of Pembrokeshire.

All five artists have a wealth of experience behind them, and this exhibition gives us an unusual mixture of strong and exciting work that is far more satisfying than the usual jaded copied images of this beautiful county.
