Pembrokeshire County Council has been given the go ahead to give advice to those seeking British citizenship. From February 5, the authority's registration service will be able to provide a checking service for citizenship applications - only the second local authority in Wales to be able to do so. The authorisation from the OISC (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner) means that registration staff will be able to help supply application forms, make sure they are filled in correctly, check and copy documents so people can keep the originals, as well as submit the application by secure post. Applications filled in correctly and completely are likely to be dealt with by the Home Office more quickly. Clr. Peter Stock, cabinet member for communities and the voluntary sector, said registration staff had been given specific training for their new role. "The new service will simplify the process for people seeking citizenship and remove the fear of important personal items being lost in the process," he stated. The checking service, which is not compulsory, will be available for a fee - from £40 for a single adult to £75 for a family with two children - and is by appointment only.
