The new leader of Pembrokeshire County Council has announced his cabinet.

Clr. John Davies has named two newly-elected councillors in the line-up, which is complemented by the appointment of four other members who will act as deputy cabinet members.

Clr. Davies said the role of deputy cabinet members was an innovation for Pembrokeshire, but explained that it was to support and share the responsibilities of the larger, more complex cabinet portfolios.

"Their appointment also extends the ownership of the decision process to more members," he added.

The areas for shared responsibility are:

• Sports, leisure, tourism and culture.

• Health and wellbeing.

• Housing and community safety.

• Small and medium sized enterprises, lifelong learning and skills.

Three of the deputy cabinet members are new faces on the authority.

Clr. Davies stressed that the additional appointments would not mean any extra costs.

"Part of the allowance for cabinet members with portfolios which are shared, will be paid to the deputies to reflect the division of responsibility," he explained.

Clr. John Allen-Mirehouse remains the council's deputy leader.

The 10-strong cabinet meets monthly to make important decisions about implementing policies for the provision of services.

Councillors who do not serve on the cabinet may become members of overview and scrutiny committees which monitor and review decisions made by the cabinet.
