A book is to be launched next year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Saundersfoot's New Year's Day Swim. Featuring photographs of previous swims, plus special memories from swimmers, the book is expected to hit bookshelves next spring so it can include the silver-themed January 1 dip. "Thousands of people have taken part in the swim during the last 25 years and we are trying to capture the magic of the spectacle, either by photograph or people's accounts," said Chris Williams, of event organisers, the Festivities Association, who came up with the idea of bringing out the book. "What the committee is looking for is pictures of swimmers, photographs taken from St. Bride's Hill, interesting stories, together with stories of the charities for whom money was raised. Some people taking part have travelled across the world, cycled from Cresselly, or simply just walked." Saundersfoot Festivities are working closely with local photographer Gareth Davies, who is renowned for wading out into the briny himself to capture the festivities on camera, and well-known historian and author Ken Daniels, whose recent pocket book on the Heritage of Tenby and Saundersfoot up to modern day was a sellout. Continued Chris, who himself has not missed taking part in any of the 25 swims: "The swim is the biggest day in Saundersfoot's calender and we are trying to get at least 1,000 people into the 25th swim. We will be targeting local groups, from Girl Guides to the village's cricketers, in a bid to get as many people as possible involved." Photographs and accounts of the January 1 dip next year will appear in the final chapter of the book. "There have been some amazing fancy dress costumes over the years, together with excellent group entries," added Chris. "Although Gareth has captured every single swim, we are looking for those special photographs which the public have taken themselves to add to our selection." Saundersfoot Festivities are also keen for every business in the village to take an active part in the book and it is hoped that every one of the 25 years - starting with the first one on Boxing Day 1984 - will be sponsored. Over the years, there have been a whole host of VIPs who have taken part in the swim, from Welsh rugby internationals to local MPs. The public houses have also played their part in the event's success, with many establishments staging live entertainment after the dash for the splash. The book will also include a chapter on the New Year's Day Swim polo shirt, which was taken around the world and photographed near well- known landmarks. This year, the organisers hope the swim will have raised over £25,000, and they are setting a target of £30,000 for the 25th swim. Anyone who has any photographs or would like to share their special swim stories is asked to contact chairman of the Festivities Association, Martyn Williams, at 18 Whitlow, Saundersfoot, or drop them into Evans Newsagents in an envelope marked for Martyn Williams's attention and with full details about the picture and the sender's name, address and telephone number so it can be returned. Alternatively, digital photographs can be emailed to Gareth Davies at [email protected]">[email protected] Every penny raised by the book will be donated to charity.
