Following last year's successful book course at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, another course is being launched in September. Once again the course, entitled 'Portrait of a Novel: The 19th Century Novel in Britain and Europe', is being run by Dr. Ann Ross, who previously taught for the Open University and at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. This eight-week course will feature classics of the 19th century novel, some of which will be familiar to the reader, others of which will be less so. The books in reading order include Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte; Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy; Cousin Bette by Honore de Balzac, Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev and Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. The course will take place at the National Park Visitor Centre by the Five Arches. Collections manager, Mark Lewis, said: "Ann's informative course was extremely well received last year and she was enthusiastic to undertake another such session. The museum is again very grateful to Ann for her generosity and willingness to share her knowledge and to make reading some classic works of literature a more meaningful and enjoyable experience. We are also very grateful to the National Park for the use of their Visitor Centre as a venue." The first week of the course will be an introductory context-setting session and the final eighth week will be a summation of the previous weeks. There will be a run of four weeks, commencing on Thursday, September 6, followed by a two-week break, before the final four-week session starts on October 18, which Mark says 'will offer readers the opportunity to give these extensive works of literature the time and effort they deserve.' The course will cost £20 for the full eight weeks and it is necessary to book a place. Please call the museum (01834 842809 for further details.
