Gilbern cars and the Sinclair C5, symbolising a high point and a low point in Welsh car manufacture, are two of the products featured in the 'Never To Be Forgotten' programme (Wednesday, September 7, 11 to 11.30 pm, ITV1 Wales) about goods and items made in Wales.

Professor Gareth Williams joins Arfon Haines Davies in the studio to view rare film footage of some of these products in use or, in the case of the C5, being launched to an unsuspecting public in Merthyr's High Street.

Not only were the public unsuspecting, they were also unappreciative and the C5, brainchild of Sir Clive Sinclair and made at Merthyr's Hoover factory, lasted no more than 10 months before being discontinued.

Gilbern Cars were a different story. It was a truly Welsh car manufacturer founded in the late 1950s by the unlikely combination of a master butcher, Giles Smith, and a German engineer, Bernard Friese. In all, just over 1,000 of the Fibreglass-bodied cars were made - six different models - at a workshop in Llantwit Fardre. The company ceased trading in March 1974.

Welsh tinplate is featured with Ivor Emmanuel taking us on a visit to the Trostre Works, Llanelli, in a bizarre clip from his show, 'Ivor Comes to Town'. Toys from the Louis Marx factory in Swansea; perfume from the monks of Caldey Island and coracles on the River Teifi are also included.

There's a fashion parade extolling Welsh wool as the next must-have material in haute couture and rare black and white footage of cockle pickers in Penclawdd.

'Never To Be Forgotten' is an ITV Wales production, presented by Arfon Haines Davies, produced and directed by John Welch.
