During the week of October 16, all students from Netherwood School took part in the 'Roald Dahl Foundation National Readathon'. The 'Readathon' encourages our children to read for enjoyment and at the same time, helps sick children, in the area. There have been many age appropriate activities, ranging from individual reading and the creation of book reports to colouring and painting, studying Roald Dahl and listening to Mrs. Pattison's tremendous rendition of 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox'! 'Readathon' is a national sponsored reading event that is held in schools annually. All the money raised is donated equally between 'CLIC Sargent' and' The Roald Dahl Foundation'. The money is spent locally, caring for children and young people suffering from cancer, Hodgkin's disease, leukaemia, epilepsy, blood disorders or acquired brain injury.
Brough Girling, Readathon chairman said: "We are thrilled that children from Netherwood School have enjoyed reading lots of books and we, and the charities, would like to thank them for all the money they have raised."
We hope that this event will become part of the Netherwood calendar, so that we can continue to help this very worthwhile cause, as well as further promote reading within our children.
Our junior public speakers performed well in the recent Rotary Junior Youth Speaks competition held at Greenhill School. Although we did not win this year, special mention should be made of Natasha Fiddy, who won Best Opposer on the night. Well done to all who took part. We now look forward to the senior competition, which will be staged at Netherwood on Tuesday, November 14.
We are always proud of our sporting achievements, as we are our academic, but this month we are delighted to highlight the successes of three of our pupils.
On October 15, Ele Scourfield, Year 5, was awarded first prize in a showjumping competition, for a clean round. She also gained a third place for a 'not so clean round'. Very well done Ele.
Also, Alexandre Kirchherr, Year 5, came second in a swimming competition at Haverfordwest, beating all but one in the 200m breaststroke. As well as entering the Rotary Junior Youth Speaks competition on October 17, Johnnie Delahunty, Year 9, was successful in the 'front crawl' at Aberystwyth. He is now through to the National Schools Swimming Championship - congratulations Johnnie, and in fact, to all three of you.
