The Friends of East Williamston Community Jubilee Park were joined on Saturday to plant trees in memory of Graham Doney, who had recently passed away and lived in the village of East Williamston.

Graham had made Pembrokeshire his home for many years with his wife Mina. He was a great supporter of the East Williamston Community and Hall Association and the Jubilee Park and served as a trustee of the hall.

He was a practical and enthusiastic person and committed his whole effort to all he was involved with, be it teaching, home renovation, car restoration, computing and sailing!

It was a credit to him that so many arrived on Saturday morning, when it was grey and drizzly, to plant trees in what will become known as ‘Graham’s Wood’. Nearly 500 trees were planted which will grow into a wonderful wooded area in the park.

The volunteers included Graham’s wife Mina, Janine, Jenna and Alex, Elliot, grandson Rudi, sister Averil and mother, best friends Bill, Nan, Tommy, and good friends and neighbours, as well as many members of the Friends of the Park, Ian and Linda Wilkinson, all of whom knew Graham well.

The trees were provided by the Woodland Trust through the Free Trees for Schools and Communities scheme. The trees planted included Birch, Rowan, Hazel, Crab Apple, Cherry, Elder, Willow and many more which will provide food for the wildlife and year round colour.

The Friends of East Williamston Jubilee Community Park was established in 2002 with the help of grants and now provides an unique nature reserve and recreation area in Pembrokeshire. It is popular with many locals and holidaymakers in the area too - especially those with dogs!

The Friends meet on the first Saturday of each month to carry out a couple of hours maintenance in the park and are a friendly group. The total area of the park is about 18 acres and includes a play area, an exercise area and paths and walks through the natural areas, encouraging wildlife. The group do some clearing scrub to allow the spring flowers to come through, hedging, path laying, hedge planting and are now involved in developing an area recently acquired for the park known as Hainey Moor.
