BBC Radio Four has snapped up the latest play by Pembrokeshire-born writer Gary Owen. Over Night - described as 'a contemporary 40- something love story' - will be broadcast across the UK on Thursday, November 2, at 2.15 pm. Gary sprang to prominence with the play Crazy Gary's Mobile Disco in 2001 and was invited to join the National Theatre. The award-winning plays The Shadow of a Boy and The Drowned World followed and Gary - who often weaves West Wales locations such as Whitland, Milford Haven and Llanybydder into his plays - is now one the most highly acclaimed writers in Wales. Over Night is the tale of Karen and Alan who meet at 'Bellbottoms', a club where the '70s never died. They are both not-so-recently divorced, both in their 40s and both have friends who've been harping on about it being time for them to 'get back out there'. Karen and Alan find themselves in a cab, then in Karen's front room - and then it all becomes horribly cringe-making and they find themselves very suddenly sober and wondering what on earth they were thinking. Over Night is the latest network success for the BBC Wales Drama Department. As well as a string of plays that have been broadcast on national radio, the department is responsible for the hit return of Doctor Who and the forthcoming Cardiff-based television drama series Torchwood.
