NARBERTH U13s 39 pts
WEST PARK, ST HELENS U13s 21
The Narberth Under 13s rugby team kicked off their season with a good win against a touring side from St. Helens in Lancashire on Friday evening.
Playing in ideal conditions, the home side quickly took the initiative and spent almost all of the first half in the opponents' side of the field.
Despite facing a much larger pack of forwards, the Narberth youngsters did well in the scrums and lineouts, providing good ball for their smooth running backs. This resulted in three first half tries for speedy fullback Gethin Salter and one for strong running centre Nick Jones.
The visitors scored their first points when one of their big forwards broke through some poor tackling to gallop away for a try which was converted.
The second half began with the St. Helens youngsters using their bulky pack to great effect, with strong drives up-field. After a period of sustained pressure, they scored the first of two deserved tries close to the posts, both of which were converted.
As victory seemed to be slipping away from them, the home side reverted to their passing game. This produced another three tries from scrum-half Gavin James, winger Sammy Hampson and Gethin Salter. Two of the Narberth tries were converted by fly-half Rhodri James.
The Narberth team was: Sammy Hampson, Sam Macnaghten, Rory Bennett, Nick Jones, Rhodri James, Gavin James, Luke Davies, William Roberts, Daniel Higginson, Paul Brown, Daniel Adams, Gareth Jones, Jamie Lewis, Ben Davies and Gethin Salter.
Any boys interested in playing rugby at Under 13s level are very welcome at the training sessions at the club on Sundays at 10 am or Thursdays at 6 pm.
