Narberth did well to come away from Beddau with the points, after a committed all-round team performance.

It was a gruelling encounter, but each Narberth player on the park played a part in grinding out a win, in one of the most difficult away venues in Division One.

The pack played a key role in the set-pieces, with solid work in the scrums and by winning clean ball in the lineouts. Also, the back row of Katilimoni Tuipulotu, Gareth Bennett and Meurig Daniel tackled their hearts out, spoiled possession for Beddau and initiated or supported attacking moves as ball carriers.

It was a game made for acting skipper Chris Macdonald at scrum-half, while Gareth James proved to be a more than capable deputy for the injured Simon Daniel at outside-half.

Although Beddau had the better of the try count, for most of the match the Narberth defence was rock solid. The back three ran at the Beddau defence at every opportunity, although the Otters could have scored more tries if there had been more awareness of players running in support.

Speaking after the match, Chris Macdonald said: "It was a very physical game, but we took our chances and scored more points in the end. Hard yards were gained, the defence was great, we should have scored more points, but we ground it out and achieved a nice win."

A penalty by Gareth James after just three minutes gave the Otters an early lead and the visitors came close to scoring again minutes later when Chris Macdonald broke through up the right, but the pass to winger Daniel Gravell went to ground.

James extended the lead with a well judged drop goal. Later in the half, James shaved the post with a penalty attempt and on the stroke of half-time Narberth took the lead into double figures

From a scrum near the right corner, number eight Gareth Bennett touched down for an unconverted try.

At the start of the second half, Gareth James increased the lead with a penalty and the Otters appeared to be sitting comfortably. However, as players and supporters who know the ground realise, Beddau are at their most dangerous playing down the slope, especially when the opposition can be blinded by the sun.

Beddau bounced back with a counter-attack from an interception inside their own 22. After a series of raids by the threequarters, right wing Gareth Hopkins cut inside to score an unconverted try halfway out on the left.

The deficit was reduced after 30 minutes when lock Carl Thomas went over for a try from a line out inside the Narberth 22, despite protestations that the ball had not been grounded

Fortunately for the visitors, the conversion kick was off target and a penalty by the consistent Gareth James shortly before the end of the game clinched the result for the Otters.

A last minute penalty attempt by James hit the posts and the final whistle was a relief for the large crowd of Narberth supporters and the players.

Narberth fielded Nick Jones, Daniel Gravell (Deiniol Evans), Andrew Bowen, Elgan Vittle, Andrew Jones, Gareth James, Chris Macdonald, Barry Davies (Fifitapuku Faletau), Simon Delaney, Alan Phillips, Jamie Bohata, Jason Jennings, Katilimoni Tuipulotu, Gareth Bennett and Meurig Daniel.
