What a difference a week can make. The Saturday before, a four-wheel drive vehicle with a small trailer did not make five yards into the car park, at a work party - that was how wet it was. The next Sunday saw a dry, sunny day with a chilly northerly wind to greet the excellent entry for the first round of the Welsh Classic Scrambles Championship, hosted by the Narberth Classic Club at their Cott Lane venue. The track was in superb condition for a great day's racing that saw some superb action in all classes, and many good scraps were witnessed right down the order of racing. First class out was the 250cc two-stroke and 350 four-stroke which had a good sized entry and produced some great racing, won by Rob Jones, BSA, who won two heats from Bob Stringer, BSA, and Rob Hamer, BSA, with one win. Second race out was the Pre-74 250 race and saw the usual hoards of mostly screaming two-strokes with the odd few four-strokes amongst them. This was won by John Price, Honda, with three leg wins after some furious battles with Ian Evans, Honda, and third place went to Ian Davies, Bultaco. Next came the Pre-60s and Mettise Class combined, which saw evergreen Terry Challinor have some reasonably easy wins on his very potent Triumph Mettise, but some fast and furious racing went on not far behind between the next five places, seeing Roger Dunford take second, Jawa Mettise, and Paul Evans, Jawa Mettise, a close third. Challinor won all three legs. Pre-74 over 250 were next to line up and the first race was won by Reece Edwards on his CZ, but alas it cried enough in the second race and took no further part in the meeting, so the win went to Andy Owens, Husky, with one win, with Kevin Nichols, BSA, second and Thomas Davis, Maico, in third with the other win. The Pre-68s Unlimited Class qas won by Rob Jones on his bigger BSA, just beating Terry Challinor on the big Mettise, with Phil Edwards, Cheyney Triumph, in third place; all won one leg each Twin Shocks, which are non championship, was a mixture of European and Japanese two-strokes that gave a good account of themselves with some hard cut and thrust racing. It was won by Reece Edwards, Maico, with three leg wins, from Ben Davies on another Maico, with Tony Macklin's very nicely prepared 600 Aberg Replica Yamaha four-stroke getting third place. Last class of the proceedings was the sidecar, which was nearly a clean sweep for Paul Harker/Derrick Bodfish, but in the last race the ignition cut out and came adrift, but they got it going again for second place. They were riding Paul's recently recomissioned 850 Norton/EML. He had worked on it most of Saturday and early Sunday morning and then drove from Worcestershire to South West Wales. Second place went to Birmingham pair Dicky Skinner/Jim Omeara on their Yamaha/Wasp and third was won by Andy Carter with 15-year-old daughter Leigh in the chair, after some spirited battles with Bryan Bodfish/Matt Bodfish throughout the day. The Sidecar Handicap was won by Matt Bodfish with dad Derrick in the chair on grandad's old Norton Wasp; being the only finishers as the rest of the crews either had mechanical problems or passenger fatigue. A grand day's sport and many thanks to the marshals who stood in the biting wind all day; also thanks to the St. Johns Ambulance members, who thankfully were not needed.
