Following the recent cold snap and wintry conditions that hit Pembrokeshire - calls have been made for Narberth Town Council to install grit bins in key areas.
County Councillor for Narberth’s urban ward, Cllr Marc Tierney has again urged the Town Council to install grit bins across parts of the town, after the area was blanketed by 3 inches of snow when bitterly cold winds drew in a weather phenomenon termed the ‘Pembrokeshire Dangler’.
After the snow and sleet hit, main routes and footpaths in the town centre were gritted by Pembrokeshire County Council but minor roads and pavements remained icy and snow covered for a couple of days.
Since 2010, the provision of grit bins in Pembrokeshire has been the responsibility of town and community councils.
Councillor Tierney first raised the issue with the Town Council in early 2024 but no agreement was reached on the purchase of bins and salt through the Local Authority.
He is now urging members to look at again at his suggestion to install a first phase of bins at Mill Lane, Coxhill/Garfield Gardens and Belmore Gardens/GP surgery.
Cllr Tierney said: “I’m pleased that the issue will be discussed the Town Council meeting in early December. Whilst snow events like this are relatively rare, this is the second time in two years that icy conditions have made it difficult for local residents to get about and this winter hasn’t started yet.
“I hope that a decision can be reached and by working in partnership with the County Council, grit bins can be installed as soon as possible for the safety and wellbeing of local residents.”
Kris O’Kane, Narberth Town Council clerk shared: “The Town Council has no highways powers, but I am liaising with PCC and housing providers and reviewing locations where additional grit bins may help residents.”
