Playing an exciting brand of 15-man rugby, Narberth Under 14s proved too strong for their visitors from Carmarthen Quins on Sunday.
The home side got off to the best possible start when flanker Ben Davies gathered from the kick-off and, from the first maul, number eight Rion Whatmore broke free to race down the touchline for the first of his two tries.
The Quins responded with a period of pressure in their opponents' half, but were driven back upfield by a forward drive, led by Daniel Adams and Paul Brown, before the ball was released to the backs. Good running by centre Jamie Lewis resulted in a ruck close to the Carmarthen line from which prop Gareth Jones crashed over.
The home forwards, with hard tackling flanker Nick Jones in impressive form, were now getting the better of the exchanges up front. This provided a good platform for the back line, well organised by fly-half Rhodri James, to put together some excellent passing moves that soon resulted in speedy fullback Gethin Salter crossing for the first of his hat-trick.
With the wind behind them in the second period, Narberth pinned the visitors down in their own half with strong drives from the pack and clever running from the backs. The Quins defended bravely, but were unable to stop one of the best moves of the game in which the ball was moved at speed through a number of pairs of hands for winger Daniel Higginson to cross in the corner.
The visitors never stopped battling and from the restart gained a deserved penalty try after laying siege to the Narberth line. They were soon on the offensive again, but a promising move was thwarted when centre Rory Bennett intercepted to bag another five points for the home side with the last move of the game.
