The point of the exercise was to introduce the scouts to what being an Army Cadet is all about and to promote the fantastic youth organisation it is. Many people have the misconception that it’s about recruitment for the Army – but it is far from that.
13 to 18 year olds are taught valuable life skills in first aid, leadership and team building, physical recreation, adventure training, navigation and orienteering, expeditions and camping, good discipline and time management.
The ACF promotes many opportunities, such as travelling abroad to those who could otherwise never afford it.
There are no end to the opportunities available with the ACF.
The event was arranged by Sgt Victoria Wells who is the Narberth detachment commander.
Victoria said: “We had a fantastic evening with the cubs, they really absorbed the ‘theory’ side and didn’t just focus on the fun and games. We had so much fun getting ’cammed up’, and learning the best way to keep hidden - which I’m sure their parents will not thank me for!
“Sgt Howells, my fellow Cadet Force Adult Volunteer had a great time teaching them about ration packs and how to cook out in the field, how to put up a ’basha’ and personal administration in the field.
“They really took everything on board - teaching is always more rewarding when the children are enthusiastic, and they certainly showed enthusiasm! They are a great bunch of children who are a credit to our community,” continued Victoria who said that anyone who wishes to get involved or to find out more to come along to their practice nights every Thursday from 6.30 to 9 pm at the Detachment in Townsmoor Carpark.
Alternatively, they can visit the ACF website, or call County Headquarters on 01656 657593.
Assistant Cub Scout Leader Gideon Carpenter said: “We have good links with the Army Cadets here in Narberth and welcome the opportunity for them to run an evening of fieldcraft activities for us.
“The Cubs learn new skills and have lots of fun at the same time.’
The town’s newly appointed Mayor of Narberth Clr. Chris Walters was also invited along to meet the group.
“It was a huge honour to be invited along tonight and meet these two fantastic organisations,” he said.
“Sgt Wells and her team have done an excellent effort tonight engaging the children and its clear everyone has enjoyed themselves!
“I’m very proud of the groups we have in Narberth especially the Narberth Scouts and Army Cadets who give up their time freely to educate and engage all these youngsters.
“When I was a Scout many moons ago I would have loved to have engaged in activities such as this.
“There is a fantastic relationship here and may it long continue.
“I must admit I have learnt quite a bit myself tonight about how to survive in the Wild and maybe hide from fellow councillors in camouflage - I am looking forward to the next event they put on!
“I encourage all parents to come along and meet the groups the Narberth 1st Scouts is a popular Scout Group and is just about at full capacity, but new adult leaders are always welcome.
“I recommend everyone to keep an eye on the events put on down here form the Scouts and Cadets to the Brownies, Rainbows, Guides and Explorers - there’s something here for all age groups!” he added.
