SPAN Arts in Narberth are busy preparing for one of the big events of the year when they present 'Word Feast', a four-day international celebration of writing and reading.
The voluntary arts group with big ideas have planned this year's event to be the largest and most interesting literature festival in the three-year history of the event.
The festival takes place in Narberth from Thursday, October 24, to Sunday, October 27, but there will be a short story competition that you can enter now on the theme of 'The Feast'.
This will be judged in three categories, under 12s, 12-16 years, and over 16s. Prize winners will be judged by writers taking part and announced on the film night on Sunday, October 27.
The event will feature some of the top writers and poets from Wales and guests from Australia and Nigeria, who will give readings, workshops and performances.
There will be a chance to tell your story or poem, take part in writing, drama, and painting workshops, and enjoy music from some of Pembrokeshire's best players.
Names include Wales' top finger style guitarist John Rodge, songwriter and digeridoo maestro, Mike Chant and poet and harpist, Moira Lewis. Pembrokeshire writers include Bob Reeves, Chris Stevens, Karen Bishop, Sue Hamblin and Julie Rainsbury. There will also be a contribution from Pembrokeshire publishers Starborn Books.
A Big Book Sale will occupy the ground floor of the building for the week and you can bring, buy and swap books of all sorts.
There will be an exhibition of Pembrokeshire landscapes by Bob Reeves to peruse on the first floor of the SPAN building. Add the foremost Aboriginal artist and story-teller Francis Firebrace and dynamic performance poet Attila the Stockbroker and a feast of words is guaranteed at this busy event.
SPAN is appealing for unwanted books of all sorts for the book sale and a sculpture will be made at children's workshops from really outdated manuals etc. that have been donated.
'Word Feast' is timed to provide half-term fun and a chance to explore the written word for adults and children. A detailed brochure can be obtained from Libby at the SPAN office on (01834) 869323. SPAN Word Feast is supported by Pembrokeshire County Council, Academi, and Dimond Press.
