Hurricane condolences

Councillors in Narberth are to write to the Mayor of New Orleans expressing their condolences at the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and giving their best wishes for the future.

Youth drop-in centre for Narberth

A drop-in centre for the young people of Narberth looks likely to be opening shortly. The facility, more details of which will be announced in due course, will be open 12 hours a day seven days a week.

Unruly behaviour

A Llawhaden resident has written to both the police and Narberth Town Council complaining about unruly behaviour of youths in the town during early evenings. When the letter was read at Tuesday night's meeting of the council, members shared the lady's concerns and also urged members of the public to report incidents to the police, and if they occurred in the vicinity of the CCTV camera, they can then look at possibly identifying offenders.

Thanks for support

Recently retired police constable, Dorian Evans, who has served the Narberth area since 1979, has written to the town council thanking members, and the local community, for their support over the years.

Narberth Bridge damage

Sometime over the weekend, doors and padlocks at business units at Narberth Bridge were tampered with and broken. Although no entry was gained, police are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area between Saturday and Monday, to contact them on 0845 330 2000.

Would you like to join Narberth Town Council?

A vacancy has arisen on Narberth Town Council. Due to personal reasons, Clr. Alan Pace has resigned as a member for Narberth Rural North. Council clerk, Mrs. Caroline Coaker, will now contact the electoral office at Pembrokeshire County Council with a view to advertising the casual vacancy.

No reduction in cover

Members of Narberth Town Council have been assured that there will be no reduction in cover at the town's fire station as a result of the planned introduction of phased alerting.

Litter pick day thanks

A letter is to be sent to the local branch of Friends of the Earth thanking them for their support in the recent litter pick day in the town. "We had a good turnout and were shocked and surprised at what we found," said Clr. Evans. The clear-up took place at Carding Mill Lane and the surrounding area. "It is absolutely ludicrous what people dump. Hopefully now the area has been cleaned up, people will be more wary of fly-tipping," added Clr. Evans, who suggested the event become an annual one.

Footpath compromise

A proposed footpath at Narberth Bridge now looks likely to be sited on the left-hand side of the road, with phase one between Castle Street and the property Sunnyside, being started hopefully in 2007. "It is a compromise, but the pavement will be raised and will have railings," said Clr. Wynne Evans, who was given the town council's support on the scheme this week.

Narberth plans

Among recent planning applications considered by Narberth Town Council were the following: The Golden Sheaf Gallery, 25 High Street, Narberth - erection of projecting sign (no objection). Vine Cottage, 5 Bridge Hill, Narberth - alterations and extension (no objection). Landsker Stores, Station Road, Narberth - alterations and extension to first floor (no objections). Honeypot House, Redstone Road, Narberth - erection of double garage and extension to dwelling (no objection).

Donation reminder

Any businesses or local organisations which pledged donations to Narberth Chamber of Trade's Christmas Lights Appeal and has not forwarded them yet, are asked to do so as soon as possible, so the chamber can present the town council with the final amount.

Name and shame campaign

Starting next week, Narberth's county councillor, Clr. Wynne Evans, is mounting a name and shame campaign over inconsiderate parking by parents outside the town's primary school in Moorfield Road.

All aboard!

Councillors in Narberth are off on their travels next week. They are going on a bus trip on Wednesday to find out more about the town they serve. Among the locations they will visit will be Carding Mill Lane, Victoria Close, Back Lane, The Drang, the Castle, the Town Moor around Wells Terrace, and the area between Narberth Bridge picnic area and the wildlife reserve.

Debate closed

Pembrokeshire County Council representative for Narberth, Clr. Wynne Evans, asked for a debate on whether parking permits for residents should be introduced in the town's St. James Street to be 'closed once and for all.' "There is no way a permit scheme is going to be effective there," he said at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council.

CCTV effective

Narberth's newly-installed CCTV system has already proved successful. "The camera has been sited on NatWest Bank and has already proved a deterrent to trouble and has caught people causing trouble," said Clr. Wynne Evans this week. Clr. Evans explained that the camera was operated by hard disk and only certain trained officers were able to view the footage. Clr. Evans also asked for letters to be sent to Superintendent Paul Amphlett and PC Max Bevan thanking them for their help in getting the camera installed. "I am now making moves to have a camera at the Town Moor," added Clr. Evans at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council.

'Backward step'

Dyfed Powys Police's new single telephone number to deal with all non-emergency calls has been described as a 'backward step.' "The new numbers mean a loss of our community link and as far as I can see it is a backward step," commented Clr. Wynne Evans at this week's town council meeting in Narberth. "It is a nightmare to get through," added Clr. Evans, who was going to monitor the situation and gauge public opinion.

New enhancement scheme?

A new enhancement scheme could be in the pipeline for Narberth. Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Wynne Evans said that discussions were taking place with regards to a new scheme for 2007.

Drain survey

Following problems with drains in High Street, Narberth, Pembrokeshire County Council will be carrying out a full survey in October/November.

Funding consideration

Narberth town councillors could be going into partnership with a local business to fund a new bus shelter for the town. Members agreed to consider allocating £1,500 towards the cost of a new shelter which would be sited opposite the existing one at the entrance to the Town Moor, at their precept meeting in January. If agreed, the council would then look at seeking match-funding from a local business.
