Narberth U3A

Last week, Narberth U3A held its initial computer group meeting (writes Dave Dando).

The aim was to explore and improve the needs of members about information technology. There was an obvious difference in skills, with some quite comfortable about using their laptop and others warily approaching a machine installed by a person speaking fluent Klingon.

There was also a feeling that the older person should not be marginalised in a world rapidly adopting a changing language. Increasingly, e-mail is given as a point of contact and you are referred to a website for information.

Communication by telephone has become an art form involving tedious music, incomprehensible alternatives, and eventually talking to someone in the Far East.

In an ageing population, the older voter is on the increase and they are the most committed in using the ballot box. They need to be informed and able to distribute information if representative democracy is to work.

The group will start with basic skills and using Power Point, as members are keen to improve means of spreading knowledge to all groups.

There are a number of relevant courses in the area which also address these issues and details will be circulated to members.

The Narberth U3A will be holding its April general meeting tomorrow (Saturday) at 10.30 am in the lounge of Williams Court, Northfield Road, Narberth (with parking in the Bloomfield Centre).

Following business, there will be a talk by Colin and Beryl Millington about their recent safari in Africa

If you are retired from full-time employment, and now have time to take an interest in any of the following: art, music, bridge, geology, history, poetry, novels, tai chi, walking, natural history, gardening, mah-jong, discussing various topical subjects, or luncheon club, then come along to this general meeting and meet others with similar interests. Telephone 862964 or 860152 for more information.
