Over 11 million people world-wide have now attended an Alpha course, an opportunity to explore the meaning of life, running in tens of thousands of churches of all denominations, and at universities, in prisons and on military bases across the world.

At an Alpha course, people explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over 10 thought-provoking weekly sessions. It is low-key, friendly and fun - and is supported by all the main Christian denominations.

The Alpha course is designed primarily for people who aren't churchgoers. Most courses attract a diverse range of guests of different ages and backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints.

Over 7,000 courses are currently running across the UK in rural and urban settings, including every major UK city. Guests attend for a wide variety of reasons - some want to investigate whether God exists, others are concerned about what happens after death. Some people have particular questions that they would like to discuss, others want to understand other peoples' beliefs or would like to explore what the purpose of life is. Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.

NARBERTH BAPTIST FELLOWSHIP

Guilt is a strange phenomenon. It stings and cuts the conscience to the bone. We go to great lengths to silence the guilt of conscience.

The scripture has ample 'case studies' in guilt since it is a common part of humanity. Guilt shows up in poor hovels and in palaces; even that of Herod Antipas. Herod Antipas, according to some accounts, was the ablest of Herod the Great's sons, and yet Jesus called him, 'that fox', He had a half brother called Herod Philip who had married a woman called Herodias. Herod Antipas fell for Herodias and pursued her to be his wife.

As a wedding present, Herod cast out his lawful wife, the daughter of Aretas, king of Petras, though this eventually resulted in a costly war with Petras.

When the couple returned to his kingdom, they thought that all would be well. But the preaching of John the Baptist exposed the whole shady deal. He had been preaching publicly that the so called marriage was not legal in Jewish Law. So Herod had John arrested but his preaching was effective. They could not get away from it, and would not be satisfied until he no longer existed. In a macabre plot John was beheaded, and his head served on a platter to say 'thank you" to Herodias' daughter who danced for Herod.

With all of Herod's pomp, he could not purge the guilt of his sin. Guilt points us to the reality that there is a law higher than our self. It is a reminder that we are not God but the Lord is - and we must give an accounting to Him.

NBF meets weekly at 6.30-7.40 pm in the chapel at Pant-y-Gorphwys Farmhouse on the main A478 from Penblewin to Narberth.

There is always a boat waiting, was the opening remark in a new series for Grace on Sunday mornings. There is always a way out, what appears at the time the correct option, but actually takes you away from God's purposes in your life. Jonah, a character known by all, but often misunderstood by many, was one who opted out and took the nearest boat. Is it possible that there is always a boat, which any of us could take to get away, at any time, but to do so would be second best. The series continues this Sunday.

Black Tie Ball

Have you seen and enjoyed the movie blockbuster, Mamma Mia? If not, do you like the music of ABBA?

The question was posed by Narberth Cricket Club chairman Huw Simpkins in announcing the decision to hold a Black Tie Ball at Narberth Rugby Cub on Friday, November 7, at 7.30pm.

Mr. Simpkins said this week: "The inaugural ball last year was a great success and everyone who came asked if the club could arrange another ball this year.

"The hit film Mamma Mia will be used as the theme for the evening. After the champagne reception, there will be a sumptuous two course buffet, entertainment by soloist Mary-Jane Jones, a fireworks display and an auction of various items, including a rugby ball signed by the Ospreys team. On top of all this, there will be a disco to round-off the evening.

"All funds raised during the event will go to the club's junior section to purchase much needed equipment for the children."

Tickets are very reasonably priced at £20 each. Private tables for groups of four or more can be booked exclusively for a small party of friends. Please call Rhian Howell on (01834) 861464 or Huw Simpkins on (01834) 860793 for more information and to book tickets.
